Streetsafari offer rally teams a 'special' prize

What a prize...
What a prize...
Streetsafari.com, organisers of banger rallies, is offering an ‘interesting’ prize to the team that accrues the highest number of points during the heat of competition.

It’s a top-of-the-range Rover Metro, with ‘an award winning 1.1 litre engine, putting out nearly 60bhp of sheer driving pleasure’. So they say.

Justin Clements, Director of Streetsafari.com said: “This Metro has to be the ultimate prize for any serious petrolhead!  Just competing in one of the StreetSafari rallies is going to be the most amazing experience, but to think that there's a rare example of great British engineering up for grabs at the end adds some real spice to the event!"

All cars feature 60bhp and boast a 0-60 time of well over 15 seconds. Each carries a uniquely rusted VIN plate showing its proud place in UK motoring history.

StreetSafari Banger Rallies require teams to buy a car costing less than £100 and to drive it, over four gruelling days to a scrapyard somewhere in Europe. CzechWrecks ends in Prague, Staples2Naples ends in Naples, and Home2Rome ending in Rome. Teams must undertake numerous challenges along the way, in an attempt to win £1,000 prize money.

I think the prize would be to scrap it along with your own car!

I'm doing the one to Casablanca in June and then the one to Rome in Sept.
Anyone else here going?

My ma had one of these and I spent most of my formative motoring years ragging around in one - it was pure luxury compared to the D-reg 1.0 City ma-ma upgraded from!

I remember the seats being really comfortable and the 1.1 engine was quite smooth along with the ride, or am I seeing this through blinkers?

Not entirely rose tinted. I had one as a courtesy car once and was surprised at how nippy it was.

Compare a 1.1 k-series metro to some other early 90s 1.0/1.1 cars

Fiesta - 45bhp
205 - 45/50bhp
Uno - 45bhp
R5 - 47bhp
Polo - 45bhp

Even a brand new 1.2 litre Polo has only 54bhp

Suddenly 60bhp doesnt seem so bad, especially for a 17 year old 1.1 engine in an 850Kg car!
