Can someone who wondered over and asked whether I had a supercharger or something, because my car was making a really large whistling noise upon booting it, do me a favour?

Can you watch this and tell me whether the noise on the video is the same/present as what you heard?

I've been puzzling over it thats all, and all I can think is that its the cone air filter I have giving it johhny large potatoes on the sucking in of air...

No not the same, your noise was really pronounced, literally just like a supercharger.

Certainly didn't seem to be losing any power or anything - I'm stumped...

You need to check the flux capacitor settings. IMHO everytime you go past 88 the tyres make too much noise and the car seems incapable of going in a straight line... hehe

Sounds like the exhaust. It's too loud from behind to be induction, and doesnt' sound like an induction noise anyway. Denton's chimeara makes a similar noise. Have you got an original exhaust on it?

Yup all original as far as I know, and healthchecked by BMW and the BMW specialist as all ok in Inspections (so not blowing for instance).

Surely, taking it one step further, if I had a leak from say a inlet/exhaust manifold perhaps, wouldn't I see a power loss?

May not be a leak, may just be something inside the exhaust causing a certain turbulence that makes the noise.

i`m not sure if this will help but a good friend had the same noise (going by the description) after changing the exhaust to part german part power flow on his e36 m3 evo. once its up the revs it really whistles and can be heard for miles!! we put it down to either something in the exhaust cause the exhaust gases to blow round it or a Y piece cause the air to whistle as it hits the point of the Y and splits. either way its highly amusing and makes everyone stop and look

mate i know the noise, mine does it to and also heard another sport do this, its just the natural noise of the gasses trying to get out the exhaust, pure pressure.
Did this once i had a genuine bmw back box fitted.
i think its a great sound.
Enjoy!!
