I have a question.
Years ago in an MG championship one competitor was 5 mph faster down the straight and his car deemed a cheat.
When said car was checked the only thing different was the fact that he put engine oil instead of gear oil in the diff and the cogbox.

Given that this might work in a race car application what oil or additives would any body suggest?

There are plenty of vehicles that have their manual transmissions filled with modified ATF, so there's an easy one.

Use the lightest weight oils you can get away with, and look carefully at the amount of bearing preloads - use the least load within specification.

The same also goes for engine lubrication and that on wheels too. Optimising every single thing a few percent can add up to quite a lot in the end.

I've heard of sewing machine oil (apparently its a very light EP rated oil)

Draining the oil from the bax a few mins before the race, leaves a bit in there

Ford ATX oil is very lightweight

VAG Bluemotion gearbox oil is like water apparently

Plenty of options out there that are more efficient than EP90 glue

No amount of gearbox drag reduction could possibly account for 5 mph extra in top speed. Maybe 1 mph. He probably had a very cleverly built engine that passed as legal but had more power than competitor's ones.

Perhaps the chap just carried more speed through the corners in the first place? Others don't like being beaten on merit.

Thanks lads there are some places to look now.
I am not concerned about whether the car mentioned was 5 or 1 mph, more interested in the safety of components as I want to try it in a one make series race, I know it works.

Many years ago a friend bought a carefully selected 3 litre Capri that really could do 130mph (most struggled to top 115mph!).
We lived near Portsmouth and would wait until Butser hill was clear of traffic (never these days) and set off standing start from the layby at the bottom. His car managed 105mph by the top and my TR5 103mph so I lost. So I used BPVF7 light oil and put a few more PSI in the tyres and the next time we played silly bees I won at 108mph.
Shortly after the road was reworked and that old hill is no longer in use.
