Oil advice and recommendations here!
Discussion
Hi, hopefully this doesn't come across as a stupid question.
I have the following in the family fleet, each has my understanding of the manufacturers recommendation;
2000 Ford Focus 1.6 (5w30)
2005 Honda Civic 1.6 (0w30)
2005 Honda CR-V 2.0 (0w30)
2005 Vauxhall VX220 2.0 Turbo (5w30)
Touch wood, all run well and none suffer from unusual oil consumption.
I have been running the Hondas on Mobil1 0w40, and the Focus on Castrol Magnatec 5w30. I haven't had to change the oil on the Vauxhall yet.
For the sake of convenience I would like to run all four cars on the same oil. Is this a mistake, and assuming it isn't, am I ok sticking with a good quality 0w40 (or 0w30) fully synthetic?
If so, is there anything I need to be aware of in terms of the three manufacturers recommendations for oil specification?
I am assuming that because of the Honda's 0w recommendation I shouldn't move those cars to a 5w rated oil.
Thanks for your time!

Hi
You could use a 5w-30 for all of those. Hondas aren't that fussy to be honest, but can burn a drop of oil if you like VTEC, so you might find they burn some of the 5w-30. The same can apply to the VX220 as well, but the Focus should really use a 5w-30. I'd probably use a 5w-40 for the lot, other than the Focus and just get a seperate oil for that.
Cheers
Tim

You will have already seen me around and hopefully the advice and posts that I have made will have been of interest to you.
As you know I work for an Oil Distributor who has access to a lot of technical information on a broad range of oils.
I am prepared to offer advice and recommendations on this thread for any make of car.
To assist me, you will need to give me specific information as the data that I get is from a proprietory database and an accurate recommendation is only as good as the information you give me.
I will not be posting brand names or prices, merely the correct viscosity and spec oils for your car.
I will email brands and prices to you on request.
I am also happy to give general advice if needed. Hopefully given time this thread will be of use to all Members of "Pistonheads".
To request a recommendation, I need the following:
Make
Model
Year
Engine size and type
Any significant modifications
Brand and viscosity currently used (if known)
I hope this service will be of interest.
Cheers

Thanks for offering this. Oil info is difficult to be sure about. As you know I work for an Oil Distributor who has access to a lot of technical information on a broad range of oils.

I've just bought a BMW MINI Cooper s R52. It's a 2005 car with 70,000 miles. It's got a service record but I don't know what oil is currently in there. I plan to change the oil annually rather than when the system prompts me and I will cover about 4000 miles per year of mixed driving. Can you please recommend an oil for me?
Hi,
As Mini is owned by BMW everything is done by BMW specs for it. Originally it would have used an oil that meets the BMW LL01 spec, but you can also use the new BMW LL04 spec. 5w-40 will be fine, but it will also be happy on 0w-30 and 0w-40. All these are BMW LL01 approved http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-685-bmw-longlife-01.as...

Hi
You need a 75w-90 GL5 oil.
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-90-gear-oil.as...
The Millers CRX NT, Motul Gear 300, Red Line 75w-90NS and Gulf Competition are ideal as top end options. The Millers TRX Synthetic/EE Nanodrive, Mobil SHC, Castrol Syntrax Universal Plus and Valvoline Synpower TDL are good, but a step down from the top oils. Fuchs Gear Syn, Motul Motylgear, Millers TRX Semi and Castrol Universal are good, cheaper options.
Cheers

Hi
I've just rebuilt an engine for my Golf Mk1 GTi 1.8 DX engine. It's a 1983 model and the engine had to be rebored out by 0.5mm on each cylinder. What oil would you recommend I use while it is run in and at what mileage should I drain the oil? Could you also recommend what oil to use thereafter. Thanks Jeremy

Hello Tim, I'm after some advice. The car has only done 800 miles and I'll be dropping the factory oil out. Afaik the standard spec is 0w30. Do you recommend Millers CFS NT 10w 40?
Also is MOTUL and redline worth the premium.
Thank you
Adam

Crikey - this is tucked away a bit now!
After a recommendation please:
2007 Renaultsport Megane 230 F1 R26
Done 131k miles
Will be approximately 3000 miles per year, bit of dailying but mainly to and from trackdays and some spirited trackday driving.
What oil recommendations do you have for the engine and (manual) gearbox please? Also, if relevant, do you have a view on frequency of changes?
Many thanks

Took me a while to find this thread. Shame, really, as it's one of the most useful threads on PH.
If opieoilman is still around, any recommendations on a 1988 Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9? Common consensus seems to be Castrol Magnatec (semi-synth) 10w40. Any advantage of moving to fully synthetic?
Max 3000 miles p.a., only road use.
