Make:- Vauxhall
Year:- 1992 (engine yr 1995)
Engine:- Corsa GSI 1.6 16v
Miles:- 6,000
Extras:- Jenvey TBs, MBE Eng Mgt (170BHP), 8000rpm rev limit, oil cooler.
I currently use vauxhall semi synthetic (I believe its 10w-40)and the engine is quite tappy. I'm silly and don't have an oil temp or pressure gauge so can't supply this info. I use the car for track days and i believe it runs quite hot. What oil would you recommend?
Cheers in advance.
p.s. I joined piston heads just to get this advice

Hmm well.

With that spec 10w-40 semi-syn is a no no. This oil is for stock road cars and really not up to the task.

I would look at a proper race oil like Silkolene PRO or Motul 300V.

An sae 40 of this quality will handle 120degC bulk oil temperature and an sae 50 around 145degC.

Personally I would try a 5w-40 first and see how the car likes it, if it doesn't then change to a 10w-50.

Look at Silkolene PRO or Motul 300V here: www.opieoils.co.uk/lubricants.htm

Hi Guy,

I've just bought a "new" toy. There is a "owners" email group, and they are currently arguing about oil. I wondered what you would recommend.

Car is an '81 Porsche 928S, its a 4.7l V8 engine.

Thanks in advance,

Sheepy.

Know this car well, my father has one.

We use Silkolene PRO S 5w-40 all year round and the car loves it.

What more can I say.

Simon,

Ever tried the GT1 0W20

Titan GT1 0W20 have being tested on the Sepang race track for the 12 hours endurance race with not power loss, overheating, oil loss, and below the factory's recommended wear and tear on the engine's components.

Yes, we have been experimenting with Silkolene PRO Race 0w-20 in a 550bhp Drag RX7 belonging to Dragon Performance. We have not done a real life run yet, purely testing but the car managed a 10.43 1/4 of a mile this year on 10w-40 so we are expecting much better on 0w-20 in 2006! We are hoping to be the fastest RX7 in Europe by next summer.

As an aside, I am informed (reliably) that the new Williams F1 Cosworth engines will be running on Silkolene PRO Race 0w-20 for the 2006 season.

Saab turbo
475 hp standard (balanced) internals with 240,000 miles (50 k since last re-build ) Mobil 1 all the time
occasional trackday take it to 7,000 rpm
however its the gearbox which is the problem big power means a lot of re-builds (on no 7 at the mo)

A lot of controversy around this

currently using Ford Zetec oil (seems to work I have had the most out the box since I changed) but why ?
also the saab synthetic gearbox oil was the worst ..very crashy
but the smoothest was when one of the saab tuners re-built the box they used a "strange"mobil oil which was very slick..would not tell me which..

any recommendations ?

Is the gearbox stock or not?

If it's stock, what does the handbook say? 75w-90?

Hi

TVR
Chimaera
1996
5.0 V8
No significant mods - just rebuilding
Mobil 1 "motorsport"

Having checked your advice I will be ordering some Silkolene Pro R, but for the runinng in period I intend to use a mineral oil for the first 1000 miles. I am looking at Miller Classic 20w50 as my running in oil. Is this a good choice, or is there something better you would recommend?

With the weather being so cold I wouldn't use a 20w.

It would be better to run in on a 10w-40 or 15w-50 tops, either semi or mineral.

Hi Guy,
i have a Mitsubishi Evo8 which has a modified suction, exhaust and cams, approx. 340bhp and 400+Nm (9000km). It is used for fast road driving with very occasional trackdays. Theses days (winter) ambient temperatures vary around 0 deg (C), sometimes dropping near to -15C, however the car is parked in garage most of time time with approx. +10C. Summer temperatures rarely exceed +30C.
I wonder whether the oil i am currently using - total quartz racing 10w50 is ok for the mentioned applications?
Thanks in advance
Honza

Personally I would use a 5w-40 synthetic based on the temps you mention, I would doubt that your oil temps get above 100degC.

According to my database, synthetics (or non-conventional) basestocks should be used for "shear stability". It also recommends 5w or 10w either 40 or 50.

Gives you some scope really, I would have said 5w-40 if the car is a daily driver / road car. I think I've seen the car around TRURO in the mornings (can't be that many in Cornwall) Silver isn't it?

A bit off subject but any idea what the oil temp should be on my 99 450 Chimaera, it dose have an oil cooler (with an inline stat) Also have seen it on a Tuscan racer any merits on a diff oil cooler.

Thanks

Mine's black but I go through Truro every morning and up the A30. I've met the guy who owns the silver one at the Shell in Truro it was quite a sight - two Maseratis parked side by side at the pumps! I've only seen him once and we had to look at each others cars - same burgandy and black interior but his is an automatic. That was the one and only time I've seen another Maserati - except in a showroom. Thanks for the advice on oil (you already sort our heating oil). Thanks.

I'm not sure how hot they run but between 70 and 90degC if cooled is about right.

Diff oil should not need cooling unless you are doing something a bit special with the car off-road.
