Mercedes sprinter gearbox noise
Discussion
My friend has got a 59 plate w609 311 cdi sprinter van and the gearbox has started making hell of a rattling noise which massively increases with speed no matter what gear you are in and it's still there if you are coasting in neutral with the engine off (so it's not the flywheel/clutch).
There is also a lot of movement and clicking noise from the output shaft when you shake the prop shaft.
The cheapest gearbox I can find is at least £500 from a scrapyard but I was wondering if it is possible to just change the output shaft bearing with the box in place, I can get a new bearing for about £25 so I thought it might be worth trying before spending out on a new box.
I'm pretty handy with tools and got a half decent tool kit but have never opened up a gearbox before, does anyone know if it would be a fairly simple procedure to change the bearing with the box in place?
Thanks all
