I'm going to take my Rio to a garage to be diagnosed properly tomorrow however would appreciate any opinions / advice to alleviate (hopefully..) my fears.

Yesterday I was sharply accelerating from standing and saw a belch of dark smoke from the rear which I initially dismissed as the car 'cleaning' itself.

I then noticed that the turbo was kicking in at around 2500rpm rather than the usual 1800rpm and when I turned down the music that there was a loud whining noise that got louder with the higher revs. There wasn't any other smoke coming from the back and I was able to continue the last 2 miles to work without any significant loss of power.

Have checked the oil levels and they are perfect with no signs of any leak... Got recovery to get home just in case and the recovery driver took a look and said that the turbo was kicking in at 1800rpm again but the whining was still there. He thinks that it may be something to do with the turbo overworking as it did not have enough time to 'prep' itself?

I'm hoping that it's just a minor thing rather than a full blow out as this will basically mean a write off - a brief look online suggests it may be something like a blown gasket / split pipe but I do not have enough knowledge to say either way.

Any more knowledgeable opinions welcomed!!

  • *edit to add it's a 1.5crdi with 71k on the clock - generally driven like a saying on the motorway but the occasional cheeky run. On this journey it had covered about 24 miles at a gentle mway 60mph

Sadly mine is well out of warranty.. The 5/7 year warranties started not long after frown

I've been quoted £585 to replace it with a reconditioned one at a local garage if it can't be fixed which is rubbish but not as bad as other quotes!
