Hi chaps
I have just about finished a nut and bolt restoration of a MK1 Golf GTi. To be honest I hoped it was finished but am having some problems

I had a local garage finish some of the wiring and other jobs, one of which was to adjust the gear linkage. When I collected the car they said the gears may be stiff as a linkage rod was not an original/correct part.

Within less than a mile selecting virtually any gear was near impossible.

The problem is when the engine is OFF the gears feel great. As soon as you start the car the gears become very, very stiff / virtually impossible to select.

I replaced the non-original rod this morn but the prob remains. You can go through the gears with your foot on the clutch and whilst leaving your foot on the clutch start the car. As soon (instantly) as its running gear selection becomes a problem.

I remembered this morning that it was difficult selecting gears on the donor car. At the time I put it down to the linkage. The car was then built with a new clutch and new linkage.

This morning I have removed the clutch and the gearbox.

From what has been said would you guys think the prob lies with the gearbox or the clutch??

Cheers

The fact you can selact all gears easily with the engine not running would normally suggest a clutch problem.

Thanks for your input.

I am not sure if it makes any difference to the diagnosis but I did try the selecting gears process with the engine off/on with the clutch cable disconnected the once to see if it made any difference.

There was no difference.

What though would cause a clutch not to fully disengage gears?

You misunderstood, the clutch is not fully disengaging.........

It is not fully releasing from the flywheel, or that could be one possible explanation anyway.

Hi Chaps
This morning I removed the pressure plate and inspected. This is a new item that I purchased as a clutch kit.

I showed the local mechanic and he like me seems to think that it has to be a gearbox fault.

The clutch, pressure plate, cable, pushrod and bearing are all new.

He mentioned that the synchros could be the cause.....
