06 1.6 sxi Astra Sport Hatch Surging & starting problems!!
Discussion
Hi,
I'm hoping someone can impart some wisdom here as my Astra is at the last chance Saloon!
I firstly noticed the issue over a year ago, when at low revs, slowing down to queuing traffic, going over speed bumps etc. the car got a power loss & sudden regain, so it would lurch forward. If queuing in traffic & static, the revs would all of a sudden go up & fall away, then it would stall & would be a pain to restart! We put Redex in the fuel tank & it then seemed to run fine for the next year...
It started with the lurching again & then started cutting out (to my embarrassment) queuing at traffic lights, junctions etc. it takes some re-starting.
One morning I reversed off the drive as normal, went to pull off & it cut out, it turned the cars hazard lights on & the main interior light & the dash lot up like a Christmas tree. I couldn't get the hazards off for a good 5 mins, only fine by attempting to lock & unlock the car. Then the interior light stayed in & wouldn't turn off!
It's currently at the garage, the throttle body (? I'm female do have no idea) has been changed, but it's still cutting out. It then presented with a new problem of when trying to start it (unsuccessfully) the fuel gauge is reading empty even though there's a good half a tank in there!
Diagnostics have thrown up all the misfire codes but nothing else!
Does anyone have any ideas that could help?
Or, do I need to call an exorcist?!
Thank you

Hi, sorry to hear your having such a nightmare with your car.
Sounds like it's definitely electrical! It could easily be a damaged or disconnected earth wire, but it could just as easily be a faulty ECU. Either one can be very difficult to diagnose unfortunately.
You can buy a secondhand ECU with all the other parts that need to be changed with it for around £150~ on eBay. I had an ECU replaced by Vauxhall on a 2002 1.8 Astra and that cost over £600, so second hand could save you a lot of money if you're able to change the parts yourself.
If you need more specific information, I'd recommend trying one of the two Astra owners' forums, as there are some very knowledgeable people on there that can offer specific advice for your car.
