Hi guys,i have a vw golf 2.0l gt tdi, 05 plate, not had it long.Everything was going fine, till the other week was overtaking a car, and the power just backed off, now it drives more like a 2.0l non turbo diesel,no light have come on.The turbo doesnt seem to kick in at all even in lower gears.Anyway took it to the garage where a guy had a hand held diagnostic device, gave it some revs and told me the turbo gone on it, thats why its overboosting, and gave me a quote of £800.But will have to save up for the repair, will it be ok to drive it round locally at low speeds 30/40mph, cheers for any advice.

Pals A3 S line just this.
Only real ££ saving option was to check the variable vane actuator was moving freely. If not or if feeling crunchy, a Mr Muscle DIY cleaning sessions was next stop.

His was free and he drove it quite a while with the overboost / limp mode appearing regularly. It totally let go eventually - stranding him (and me) on side of road on a sunday afternoon.

You takes your chance !

So it feels like the turbo is not working ?

Someone plugs a computer in and from this he says the turbo is broken, and that is why the turbo is overboosting ?
Usually broken turbos would struggle to generate boost....because they're broken.

It may be worth getting a second opinion. It could be the turbo, piping, boost control system etc etc Or it may not even be any of those.

As long as it isnt smoking and seems to drive ok, you should be ok. It's unlikely to do any harm without some obvious signs.
But ideally it needs fixed.

Cheers for that, i was thinking of getting a second opinon, cos the car drives realy well and accelorates but without the pull that you would get if the turbo kicks in, only thing is there is a whirring siren like noise in the car itself when accelorating, which ive read links in with the turbo problem, im going to take it to another garage tommorow and see what they say.cheers for your input guys.
