Good day gents

I recently bought a ford xr3 and the problem im having is when I start up in the morning I struggle to get her started I have to continue pumping on the gas pedal and turning the ignition on and off, once she starts up she misses until she becomes warm and then idle settles to 1000rpm and then after there is no problems with starting and the miss. what I would like to know is what is causing this problem with starting in the morning.

if someone could help me out I highly appreciate it thank you

It sounds like you have very limited knowledge to be tampering.

But a good start for an old vehicle might be a Haynes manual. They're crap for modern stuff, but for an older vehicle there should still be some useful information in there about inspecting the various parts/operation of things like the choke.

I'm assuming you have an XR3 with a carb not an XR3i.

When cold try choking the car manually by putting your hand over the air-intake.

I suggest you get a tree branch and give your car a damn good thrashing. That'll probably cure it.

okay guys I have checked the choke I noticed it stays open but when I close it manually by pushing it in a closed position it does not cut of nor does it miss what could be causing this problem the carb is in a very good condition and looks like it has not being tampered with.

I'm not very familiar with these carbs. I think the auto choke is operated by water temp and a bi-metalic strip, sounds like this is the problem. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon.

HAHA, you have to hit it a couple of time, then move away, wait a few seconds and repeat twice more to make it work though. smile
