Im having a hard time deciding what this noise is.Ive had a car with a slack timing chain before so i know what it sounds like.Thing thats making it so difficult to diagnose on this car is its so inconsistent!
It sounds like a hard little tappety noise and its definetly coming from left side of engine.
Ive soaked alternator belt tensioner/roller wheel thingy with wd40,and the alternator pulley. It was rattling at idle,i soaked tensioner wheel then started it up,it was completely silent!!I switched it back on and the rattle was back??
It happens at cold idle 'sometimes',other times its ok.If i accelerate i hear it ,let foot off accelerator no noise?Ive held a screwdriver directly on the timing cover when its making the noise and i dont hear anything?Surely the timing chain would make a noise most of the time if its stretched etc?Anyone any ideas?
Heres a short clip, try and ignore engine noise, the sound is random clicks like two steel balls being hit together, two or three of them near end of clip. http://vid208.photobucket.com/albums/bb190/robboco...

Start with the basics first and remove the auxiliary belt to check pulleys, tensioners etc. Its not uncommon for a damaged belt to cause a tapping sound if there is a piece missing out of it, ive had this before on a mini engine.
Wont hurt to run the engine without belt for a minute to see if the noise disappears.
