Coolant and car stopping problem
Discussion
My 2006 plate Audi A4 s line seems to have a coolant problem. Two garages I have been to cannot tell me what is wrong with it. I'm having to top my coolant up every day sometimes twice a day now. Also when I put my car on from when it's been parked for a few hours, it just shakes and then stops. It will do this a few times and I have to rev the engine to get it going and it's ok after that. Well it's not a perfect drive but it doesn't stop again. Perfect drive meaning it's shakes whilst driving. Is there anyone that could please help me on what this problem maybe! Thanks
If you are losing coolant then it's going somewhere. If there is no visible leak then the likely place is the head gasket.
If it's a petrol look at the business end of your plugs. If one looks abnormally clean compared to the others that's the cylinder where the coolant is going as it will steam clean that cylinder.
The shaking if a petrol engine is likely to be caused by a plug wetted with coolant. Once it dries it will run.
Get a sniffer test carried out on the coolant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_SIwHMLmkM

It's a 2ltr diesel that I have. So would that change things? And is a big job do you reckon? I don't know if it's worth me repairing it well once I find out what it is or to just sell it as it is. I don't know if I'm making it worse by driving it everyday! 😁 don't know much about cars!k
Quite simple really, if you are losing water & it is not external, then it is internal.
As you are also describing the symptoms of the engine not fully firing on all cylinders when you then start it up again, the water is ending up in the cylinder that is not firing.
If, as you say 2 different garages can't come to this simple diagnosis, then you need to take it elsewhere.
A simple compression test will tell you which one it is going to, you need a new head gasket or possibly a head if it is cracked/warped.
