LDV engine conversion using Mercedes engine help.

Apologies if in wrong section.
After now owning a few Mercs and looking to buy another at the end of the year of the V8 variety I would like to use an engine from one in my LDV camper conversion.
It a a LDV 400 Luton and has a Peugeot 2.5td (ET70) engine which is on it's way out and isn't worth repairing crap power and economy.
What I would like to do is use wither a 2.5td or 3.0td from a Merc as a replacement and also use the autobox.
I love these engines and I believe it would be far more superior to using a another Peugeot or Ford. Not only that I know these run happily on veg oil (as mine all did) which is another massive bonus.
Ideally what engine would be best, realistically the less electronics the better and for how I want to use it, it would have to be pre CDi.
