1.7 cdti won't t start astra

the car was running fine and starting with no problems, it had a couple of codes came up when we could read it, one was the map sensor, so that's why we changed it. just in case that could have been anything to do with it.
It started getting really hard to crank and then just stopped cranking all together, just the electrical noise when the key is fully turned. we replaced the battery anyway as if it wasn't that it would come in handy in one of our other cars.
The car as it is now, wont crank but all lights and central locking working, the beeping when the key isn't removed etc all still work, We have been thinking immobiliser for the past few days until i read here about the alternator, thanks

We have a little diagnostics machine, its just a smaller one but has worked fine in this car (and others) until the astra gave up, and we also used a friends one which isn't a cheap one and he couldn't get on to read any codes, pedal test wont work either, which is leading us to think ecu failure possibly

ECU faults are rare...and often caused rather than just happening.If the code reader did work before...and doesnt now, not a good sign.
Is it a crappy code reader or can it offer live data ? If you are getting no communication at all, that isnt really a good sign. You'd need to check the ecu is getting power, fuses, relays, whatever.
You really need Tech2 or Vauxcom to see what modules within the vehicle you can communicate with, if any.
do you know what would cause the ecu failure? it literally was running fine then an hour later, it cut out, started it again and did the same, then went to not starting at all, we haven't moved or driven it since it was last running either, so it just happened on the spot where it sits.
its just a code reader that we have but our friend has one a good bit fancier. there is power coming to both of them, just not reading anything. have checked all fuses and relays over and over..
Do you know if it was immobilised, would that stop the code readers from connecting the ecu?

Presumably when you say not starting, it is turning over ok ? Do you have any other keys you can try ?
Yeh we have spoken to another friend who has a better machine, so hopefully we can get a look at that tomorrow.
no it doesn't turn over at all, not even a click of the starter trying to bite or anything, just the electrical sound sometimes whining but even that isn't all the time, the car and spanner sign is on constantly.
We do have 2 keys and have tried them on there own and taken them off the same key ring...

You need to check the starter is ok, whether there is power to it, whether there is power when you turn the key to energise the solenoid on the starter etc etc.
You're describing partially different problems. Non start can mean many things....your isnt even making any attempt to start at all...not just not starting lol
The immobiliser doesnt usually affect the engine turning over on the key though.

Then test the f**king thing. Some of the answer could be resolved in a few minutes nevermind days.
And as said, cheap basic code readers are ste for any proper work. But if they worked before, they should work now. But also as already said and explained there are a few reasons why there may be no communication.
You need to do some testing.
