I was reminded earlier of when my friend said he could make my old E30 look far nicer and of how terrified I was once he started! I watched the car become a sanded, dull mess with no shine at all.
She was completely flat... and then the magic happened..

Wet sanded my E39 530d (there's a thread in 'Reader's Cars' about the bodywork refurb project).

I painted the car myself and had a fair number of dust inclusions in the lacquer coat. Was pretty nervous about wet sanding since it's a really counter intuitive thing to do to new paint. Was delighted with the finished panels though! Sort of miraculous, really.

As the bodywork pros say, 'if you can't paint, get good at wet sanding'.

Yes - it's not for the faint hearted and you need to be aware of what you are working with.

Results are brilliant
