Hi all I have an MOT advisory for discs and pads (front) on my Volvo but cant help feel like getting the garage to do it is a cop out. I know there is potentially serious consequences if I screw it it up. I have limited mechanical experience, I can change a wheel, do an oil filter and air filter and change the oil. The best price I have been quoted P+L is £155. Parts are about £80-90 for a set of discs and pads. Should I just man up and get on with it? How hard can it be?

Easy.

Watch a few youtube videos or find a how to guide on an owners forum. Take your time and think about what you're doing.

It's very straightforward, your access is easy enough after all. Just follow the manual. The fronts will be very easy, once you can remove the retaining screw which may be corroded in place. You may then have to get a bit brutal with the disc. Just use a big hammer, it's on a hub that is subject to huge forces anyway so you won't damage anything other than the disc that's coming off anyway.

The handbrake may be tricky. Some rear brakes need a special tool to wind the pistons back, so watch for that.

Otherwise easy. Degrease everything and scrub the bits the pads slide on with a wire brush, and make sure there's a thin smear of coppergrease where the pads slide about and where the piston pushes on the pads.

Edit, don't grease anything that wasn't already greased!

I've just this evening put a new rear caliper on the Ford galaxy. Swapping brake parts is quite easy really but getting air into the system can be frustrating.

My brake pedal feels a tiny bit spongey now... bolliks!

as said watch a few youtube vids and then see how you feel , its kinda the next step on for the guy that can do a service etc

check you have the correct sized tools before getting stuck in , and brake cleaner the new discs as they come oiled to prevent rusting in the shop
