Hi there

I would be grateful for some advice on a car I recently bought from auction (VW Up 2013, 19k with full VW history). The car is perfect apart from the following - when I press the clutch there is a "rattling" noise which is more pronounced when you increase the revs. It only does this when the clutch is depressed so is this likely to be the release bearing? After a bit of research clutch/gearbox problems are an issue with the Up, but more so when the clutch is not engaged.

The other issue is the gearbox is quite noisy when driving, especially under load (growling sound), but by all accounts VW says it's a "feature" of the car...could this another symptom of the release bearing?

Thanks

Tim

Firstly, congratulations on a perfect description of the noise made by the failure of a release bearing, but don't forget that premature DMF failure may sound similar.

Secondly.

There are many features of a gearbox.

Quick changes could be a feature of an auto.

Close ratios could be a feature of a sports gearbox.

Feckin' noise is not a "feature" of a gearbox...... This you need to follow up, if you can.

Are you sure that car is not still inside the warranty period? If it's not, it can't be more than a few months out. I think you should go to a dealer and see if you can get some "good will" at the very least.

Thanks for the replies; it is just outside the manufactures warranty but I have an extended VW warranty so will follow that up although it does exclude the clutch.

1) The car makes a rattling noise when the clutch is depressed (and revved), more so when it is cold.
2) When I am driving there is what can best be described as a "growl" (it's not from the engine) when in gear.

Question - could a faulty release bearing also be causing the second noise (2)?

I agree, no.

Might be a different fault. Could there be any contact between the exhaust and the bodywork of the car?

I have to disagree with everyone but hey, what's new? A "rattle" is a sign of something NOT under load. Release bearings tend to squeal when the pedal is pressed (putting them under load) when they're failing. They don't rattle. What is now NOT under load is the clutch friction plate but it's rare for those to make any noise. Anyway it's nigh on impossible to diagnose anything from the description of a noise over the intergoogles.
