My son recommended this site as a font of knowledge so I'm hoping my first post will be answered favourably.

I have an Iveco 2.3litre diesel 35s14. Been sorn since nov 2015

Run up weekly since but recently prepared for road and as soon as I left the yard and changed into 2nd and 3rd gear the exhaust started emitting blue smoke and on inspection turbo and intercooler full of oil. Further inspection showed old return pipe in sump had snapped from mount and damaged oil spray tube on no 3 and nicked the bottom of no 3 piston skirt with no other apparent damage. All parts ordered and fitted, engine, pipes and turbo flushed.

First run up and down lane (1/4 mile) into third gear slight smoke under pressure 2 subsequent runs showed slight increase in blue smoke. Engine brought up to operating temperature and 3 more runs still with slight blue smoke under pressure in 2nd and third gears, but nowhere near as bad as it was with the blown turbo.

Any observations please would be helpful.

"old" return pipe ?

And presumably you found out why the turbo and associated pipework was full of oil ? You dont seem to mention this or what was repaired to prevent it again ?

Sorry Stevieturbo, it should read oil return pipe.
Cause was as stated snapped bracket and being churned around bottom of engine causing fragments of the metal which had bypassed the filtration system to enter the turbo oilways and damage the seals and turbine shaft. Remedial as stated.

So you're saying turbo was replaced with a new unit and installed correctly ?

And all pipework, intercooler etc thoroughly cleaned ?

And the oil return is just that...an oil return to the sump. This breaking cannot damage the turbo, other than if it allowed all the engine oil to escape and the entire engine run dry of oil, including turbo of course.

Smoke aside, is the engine running and driving normally ? Is crankcase breathing and breather system etc ok ?

Oil return broke and fragments of metal were carried into the oil system causing the turbo seals to leak. Fragments of metal found throuhgout the engine as previously stated so thoroughly flushed before new turbo fitted.

No loss of power.
Engine starts and revs fine when stationary.
No blue smoke isduing at high revs when at 2000 to 4000 revs and held static.
Crankcase breathers free and clean
No misfires or trouble starting hot or cold.
Recommended oil and all filters renewed as a precautionary measure.
Turbo pipes and intercooler checked after initial test runs and all found to be oil free
