Hi Guys,

i just built my first Porsche engine, a 930. Complete build, with new cylinders, bearings etc.
I just started it up on an engine stand to look for oil leaks.
Generally its all fine. Engine responsive, no ill noises etc. BUT it has some oil smoke, which I assume normal at this stage.
I am a bitt puzzled though on the best running in method. The Porsche is big bore, with a rather smooth honed nicasil cylinder. What is the bset method to make an oil tight engine? Please reason Your opinion if possible.

Thanks in advance!

I would just use it fairly normally....and not laze about.

Rings need cylinder pressure to help them push against the bore and seal, so give it some.

No high gear low rpm lugging type stuff, use the mid-range and try and vary the throttle openings quite a bit, I could do it for you? no really i don`t mind

Hello grasshopper. Glad to see you still alive. New screen name for reasons I won't go into on here. No, smoke is not normal even before running in. Nikasil is a can of worms. If the bores are not good there's not much you can do about it now.

After setting the K-jet the oil smoke disappeared. The bores/pistons are brand new (original Mahle). Piston.bore clearances checked - at factory give tolerances.

I was thinking if the alusil need any special method of running in (?)

You going to make your mind up whether it's Nikasil or Alusil?

As You see, it was a bit late at night yesterday. And of course it is nikasil.

My normal running in rules apply. The piston rings should have removed the nickel layer within a few hundred miles and by then it should be good for full beans and no mollycoddling.

Anyway I'm sure Porsche have been building these for long enough to have a pretty tried and trusted set of running in rules whatever those are.
