Failed MOT emissions Audi A3 investigate or get rid?!
Discussion
Sorry but I am pretty clueless!! Got a 2003 Audi A3 that Ive had for about 5 years, never a problem except recently changing front bearings. Failed MOT today as Emissions test had to be aborted as too much smoke, engines clean so no oil leak but car had 5 pints of oil put in during test which disappeared so they said its burning oil somewhere & best I could hope for was £70 scrap as wouldn't be financial worth it to try fix it! Do I try a cat cleaner?? Just can't quite believe it's the end of the road for such a lovely runner when it doesn't sound like a knackered engine, any help, ideas or things to check would be greatly appreciated!!
5 pints ???
That's a major problem that didn't just suddenly apeer.
Probably rings but with that amount of oil burn you must have had a smokescreen following you down the road
I would check breathers to see if it's sucking oil from a breather into the inlet manifold after that it's a compression test and or leak down test

I'm with the previous poster, 5 pints is over half an oil change over the duration of an MoT ? At that rate you wouldn't be standing in the same room, and that's assuming the engine would actually run. Something wrong, either get a mate "who knows these things" or try another garage.
I'm not too much of an expert, but a few points: 5 pints???!!!! Never heard anything like that before, but: 1) You say emissions had to be aborted, but were YOU actually present, BEFORE, DURING and AFTER the test? I think you might know where this is going, but did you actually see the oil being put in? Did you see them check the oil level beforehand? I don't like speaking too soon, but something doesn't sound right here, as in were they trying to pull a fast one?
Actually, I've just had another thought on this one! Either one of two scenarios here. 1) The car developed a sudden MAJOR oil burning fault during the test (they don't shut the engine off during the test at all), or 2) It's had that fault all the time, but in that case, how on earth have you been driving it about, and how did you get it to the test? Surely the engine would have seized before now? Oh and btw, 5 pints (on MY car anyway, a 1.9) is MORE than an oil change (takes about 3.5 to 4 pints roughly). Take it to a council place for a second go (they don't have an incentive to fail cars, because generally they don't do repairs, only downside(if you view it that way) is that it's a thorough/strict test).
