Only one gear and no idea

I have a 1998 E55 AMG, low mileage, lovely condition with only one forward gear- it did have 5 last week.
The autogearbox had a leak and lost less than a litre of fluid. The leak was fixed and fluid was carefully replaced/ topped up using correct fluid and MB dipstick. Car now will only now engage reverse and 2nd gear when put in drive. There is a slight whining noise that sounds like an alternator bearing but it is linked to gear speed and not engine speed( no sound if engine revved in neutral) does anyone know if this is end of gearbox? It had a rebuild only 2 years ago.

Just been to check with auto transmission specialists who cleared the fault and topped up fluid. All is well. Maybe I'll leave such things to the experts next time.
