oil sandwich plate
Discussion
Oil flows from the engine into the outside of the filter then back into the engine via the centre screw.
In terms of the oil cooler the pipes normally come off the same face of the cooler so it will make little difference which way it flow particularly as yours will likely be mounted horizontal with the pipes coming from the top.

Thanks Steve. I am running a remote filter as well, so which would be the in and out on the sandwich plate.
Thank again
The same as he has described.Thank again
Oil flows into the small holes in the filter, and back out the middle hole to the engine.
Up to you to look to see how your system is configured and with what parts.
Ok thanks. Lets see if I have I got this right.
Going 'in' goes to the outside of the housing and the out comes fom the 'inside'
The reason I ask is that I took the car round the block and felt both the oil cooler and the remote filter and they were both cold.
Thanks for your advice and patience for what I suppose is a simple question.

You do realise that if you get this wrong....you will totally destroy your engine ? Unless you're very lucky to use a filter without a non-return valve ? Of which those are few thee days.Going 'in' goes to the outside of the housing and the out comes fom the 'inside'

When I described this before I was referring to the filter not the plate.Going 'in' goes to the outside of the housing and the out comes fom the 'inside'

The oil flows from the pump into the small outer holes of the filter and returns to the engine oil galleries via the filters centre screw.
Sandwich plates differ in design so I can't tell you which hose port is which. You can only do that by studying the machining/casting of the plate which will likely mean removing it. Pop it off and bring it round if you want.

Yes. Hence the question?
And hence the very clear answers. You need to check your system. There is no generic answer someone can give you for your system when we cannot see all the parts used. The only generic answer is oil flows into the oil filter via the small holes, and back out into the engine via the central hole.
