Hi - someone techie may be able to answer this? I'm sourcing an after market oil filter for a boat diesel engine. I've been offered Fram PH46 and Fram PH4990B. Physically, they both fit; the main technical difference seems to be the relief valve setting 16psi on PH4990B, 30psi on PH46. The PH46 is (via an equivalents chart) the "right" one, but what would be the effect of using the unit with the lower valve setting? I change the oil every year - annual hours usually < 100, so it should be quite clean.

The relief valve in a filter is there to ensure oil can still pass if the filter is chock full of ste.
So on the basis that you know you change your oil/filter in good time then it should make no difference which you use.

More factors than dirty filter are involved, but I doubt you drag race it or use it in Winter much, read here: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.ph...

Thanks guys. Thou if a filter is indeed clogged with that soft smelly stuff, it can't say much for your routine maintenance! Interestingly, I've seen diesel FUEL filters that have been completely blocked by diesel bug/algae. But again, I doubt if they'd been changed as often as they should be.
Appreciate your time and effort!
