Bought this engine today unseen honestly bought it just to mess about with as I have never had opportunity to play about with an engine and for the sum of £40 I paid for it I am not to bothered. there appears to be some hefty scrapes and dimples which cant be good for creating a seal but I am clueless thought id ask before I start mucking about.

It appears from the photo that the head had gone soft, if the fire ring around the cylinder is indented as it appears to be then the head is a doorstop.

Blocks can soften and allow the liners to hammer in. Check the liner heights, if these are less then 0.1mm proud of the block then this will need addressing, if the liners can't be removed then that can indicate the liner land has hammred and has crept into the liner relief ring, the block is scrap if that has happened. If the liners are low but they can be removed without too much force then you can machine or linish the top of the block to give the correct protrusion, or you could use liner shims to bolster them.
