job done - took around 30mins though this was as I had not taken off the air box before plus fiddling around with those bloody clips! Next time I am car shopping I will probably get some hose clip pliers https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sealey-VS166-Clamp-Pliers...

Yes - job done and first test today and fully warmed up in 8 to 10 mins where as before it was +20mins! Oil temp also came up to temp much earlier as well which has to be good for the engine. Thanks again :-)
One think I am concerned with was a possible cooling air lock. I lost around 0.25 - 0.5ltr - not enough to show on the floor as it was caught by the tray under the engine and since then there has been no sign of any change in the header tank fluid levels. Is there anyway of venting off any air in the system?

Just scanning Google as I've replaced the thermostat and both temp sensors on my 2012 DSG Golf GTD and I find this thread!

Will be trying out the DSG cooler stat ASAP!

Thanks

Just to confirm the small stat in the pipework going to the DSG oil cooler was stuck open.
Replaced and now I have a coolant temp gauge that works normally and more heat from my heaters!

Despite my local garage saying it could not be a thermostat I ignored them and changed the DSG thermostat, it worked a treat. The job took less than an hour and I only lost a very small amount of coolant in the process. Mine is a 2012 VW CC 140 diesel with DSG (obviously) and my symptoms were that the car would not get up to temperature or drop down after it had got up to temperature, even on a long run.

This thread has saved me a lot of grief and cash clap

Just want to say a big thanks to all on this post for all the information regarding this thermostat replacement. Especially to RESTECP for sharing the post on a second thermostat next to the DSG gearbox.

I recently replaced the thermostat on my VW Golf GTD Mk6 (2012) due to the same problem as many others ( temperature guage playing about )

And yes what a pain of a job but as mentioned on another post there is no need to remove or even move the alternater. Just patience and perseverance got me through. And luckily for me, the bolt holding the plastic pipe was beside the oil filter housing and not behind. There is also an 'O' ring on the end of the plastic pipe that needs replacing.

Anyway after 8 hours of nearly losing my marbles job done! Only problem was I still had the same issues with the temperature gauge.
So this is where that info on a second thermostat came ever so useful as I changed that and abracadabra! Working perfect!

I would strongly recommend if you have this temperature gauge problem then change the 2nd DSG gearbox one first. Can be done in 1 hour.

Thanks again and good luck to all 👍👍

Just wanted to say thanks for this, particularly to RESTECP. I've got a Diesel Passat CC 2011 170 GT with DSG box. Car wasn't getting up to temp and would cool down on motorway cruising, especially downhill runs. Had the main thermostat, and temps sensor changed by the local garage, the problem remained. So did some googling and found this thread, mentioned it to my mechanic. He'd never heard of the DSG thermostat, so I wasn't comfortable paying him to do the job.
I did it myself, took about 2 hours. The clips on my stat were underneath, so I decided to remove the stat with the pipes attached to make it easier. It took ages, the pipe on the oil cooler is difficult to get off, had to use an allen key with some lube on to break the seal.
Anyway 2 hours work and an £18 part, and it's all sorted. The car gets up to temp in minutes and stays there. Heaters blow hotter, life is good. Thanks to everyone for posting. The internets pretty useful init :-)
One more thing, I tried to find the part through VW, eventually, they found it, but only sold it with new pipes at £138. So don't bother with that, I got mine from a site called Parts in motion. Don't think it's a genuine VW part, but it was a hundred and ten quid cheaper.

Thanks for all that posted on this thread. My temperature gauge on my 2011 diesel Passat 174 DSG was acting oddly for a few months. It would sometimes be ok and other times not warm up and be up and down a lot. Used the part number on this forum and had to order the part from our large local main dealer. £29. My local mechanic fitted it for £35. All sorted! Thanks guys!

Hi guys, i have changed my thermostat and my coolant temp sensor. However still no luck! My temperature gets to 90 and then drops on a motorway run then when driving back on local roads it goes slightly back up close to 90 and then drops if i put my heaters on.

My car is a 2012 audi a3 2.0tdi black edition dsg. Is there some kind of inline thermostat that i need to change... i did replace a whole coolant hose pipe which came with the inline thermostat at the end. However this was a used part from the scrap yard... obviously still not sticking to 90 where it should be...

Any help guys?

The main engine thermostat i had fitted was a thermostat from TPS and so was the coolant temp sensor.

The coolant hose which had the inline thermostat at the end of it was a second hand part from the scrappy

I only got the coolant hose from the scrappy because audi dealer was charging 165 pounds. As they only sell the inline thermostat with the new pipes. They gave me a part number 1K0 122 101 JQ. However i cant find an inline thermostat that fits my car. As i believe the inline thermostat on its own has a part number of 1K0 122 101 3A. I dont know whether this will fit my car or will i have to order the whole piping from audi?

I want to be sure if im spending 165 pounds that the problem will solve and il have a temp gauge sticking to 90

You would need to remove the suspect one currently fitted & test it.
Testing involves suspending it in a pan of water & heating the water whilst using a thermometer to check the water temp & see at what point the stat begins to open.

ETA Have you tried asking on an Audi specific forum? I think you would be more likely to get the answer re the part number & where to get it from.

My work horse car is a '11 Passat 2.0l diesel which has sometimes takes up to 40mins plus to heat up on the m/way and other times will be fully up to temp in 10mins... initially I thought it was a thermostat (I have been told this is a bit of a pain to change and includes removal of the alternator), but for the next week it behaves it self! A couple of weeks later, I get the same problem again for a day or so before it reverts to normal.

The question I have is this just a normal VW diesel engine issue and I should I just change the thermostat or is it some other electrical issue and I will need to get my local VW specialist to find the problem / fix it?
I dont want to leave it like this as I expect it will cause damage to the engineering running cold...
Thanks in advance Alex

I have a 2ltr turbo diesel touran, with the same kind of coolant temperature, and fuel economy as you. Do you need to change, both thermostats or just just the first or second one.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Sorry to resurrect a resurrected thread but I have this exact same issue but on the earlier 6spd auto on a 2010 140ps TDi Tiguan - do these units also have a stat around the gearbox?

I've got the car booked in to a local garage for a week on Friday as I dont have the time to look too far into this myself but knowing the initial response from a different garage on my Mk5 GTi dsg was to do the 'obvious' stat I'm concerned that I'll be revisiting again in another week to get a second stat changed. Would be useful just to give them some diretion - the car gets up to temp but generally stays below 90 deg and now its turning colder its struggling a bit more to hold a decent temp on high speed runs.
