Can anyone recommend a company in Kent, preferably in the Medway area, who can lighten and balance a flywheel?

Many thanks,

Neil

I A Motorsport in Borstal
http://www.iamotorsport.co.uk/

Not used them but website says they do engine balancing so might be worth a call. Sure they will know someone if they dont.

Also
not sure if still in business but was called minister power in lordswood. They did loads of k series tuning.

Many thanks for the suggestions - I'll have a chat with both of them next week.

Has anyone any other suggestions or recommendations?

Does anyone know how critical it is to have the clutch balanced along with the flywheel, or if it feasible to have the flywheel balanced on its own? The flywheel will be skimmed down from about 8.9kg to about 7.1kg, so it won't be incredibly light, meaning the clutch won't be a large proportion of the total weight.

True balancing does crank, flywheel and clutch cover
When I built my last engine I did the rods end to end and then matched heavy rod to light piston then evened them up by taking some weight out of the gudgon pins
Crank, flywheel and cover were done by a local engineering firm, not the neatest job as they rivited a bit of metal to the clutch cover but it works well and runs smooth for a Pinto with an RL31 cam

Most clutch covers come with a neutral balance (well the respected brands are) so it should not be an issue unless your being fussy or its intended use is competition

Unfortunately iamotorsports have just sold their lathe, and minsterpower closed shop in (I think) 2013. Iamotorsports suggested S&J engineering, but they're unable to balance the flywheel after lightening... which I guess wouldn't be a great idea.

That the clutch should already be balanced sounds quite logical!

Any more suggestions?

Not lightening, and not Kent, but TTV in Ipswich do very nice flywheels already lightened and balanced.

They do other things too it seems.

I have a thread on another forum at this.

Flywheel weights - MOI- What is it all worth?

What are you hoping to see from lightening your flywheel?

Baldyne engineering seem perfect, but are slightly too far away to be practical. I'll have to speak to my mechanic about sending parts away - I think time has got too tight. He's spoken to a couple of local shops who've refused the work - I assume due to liability.

I've driven an R-Ltd MX-5, which came with a lighter flywheel, and the engine was noticeably more lively. By lightening my flywheel I'm hoping to achieve the same thing - I track the car occasionally, and am an habitual heel n' toe-er, so a more responsive engine would be welcome.

Providing the FW is lightened correctly even a cast FW is perfectly safe Baldyne's use to lighten and balance many of my mates and my fast Ford builds back in the day, always found the owners (brothers) very accommodating and professional wink hence why I recommended them thumbup
