Which would you by and why?

I've had just about every other kind of performance car but never a big Suv.

Tales from owners or comparison from people who have driven both would be nice.

Have driven both current cars, but not those engines. The Cayenne feels smaller and more driver focussed. Accommodation for passengers not a lot of fun. Range Rover feels much bigger in all dimensions.

If you have rear seat passengers regularly, they won't thank you for picking the Cayenne. If you don't it doesn't matter.

Only back seater will be a 3 year old son I'm sure he will have ample leg room.

Not driven a current gen Turbo but I have a V8 Diesel and parents have an L405 SC.

The Range Rover rides better (albeit a bit floaty at times), bit more vague at the helm and in response but well supported enough to not fall completely apart if thrown at a corner. The Cayenne still rides well in Comfort mode but the body control and response is much more car like and the steering and front end much sharper and linear. The downside is that it isn't as isolated and finds the bump stops more easily on bigger bumps. Generally the Range Rover feels like a well sorted, luxurious 4x4 while the Cayenne feels like a tall saloon car.

Inside the Range Rover is lovely in its presentation and materials and is far more luxurious in general ambience but I find actually doesn't have as much occupant space as the Cayenne, both in terms of rear leg room and front shoulder space, so if you're taller/wider than average it's something to consider. The infotainment is a bit dated in both by today's standards but the Cayenne's is more usable. The biggest difference is the driving position, the Cayenne is far more car like while the Range Rover you're perched up very high, when driven back to back its very marked. Down to personal preference, I like the position of the Range Rover when cruising but enjoy the benefits of the lower position in the Cayenne when chucking it about.

In terms of Powertrain like I said I haven't experienced the Turbo but I suspect it's the better engine of the two as I actually prefer most aspects of the Diesel V8 over the 5.0 SC. The Range Rover is rapid but never feels as quick as the numbers suggest and needs to be wrung out to get the best of it. It's no hardship as although quiet it still sounds lovely and is very smooth but it's not as flexible and I've never experienced a situation where I've struggled to keep up with the old man even in my car and he has a heavy right foot! I suspect with another couple of thousand RPM to play with and another 150bhp over my car the Turbo would knock its socks off.

Generally speaking if you're not bothered about performance then it's an easy choice, Range Rover if you're never expecting to drive it hard or Cayenne if you're going to get frustrated with not being able to enjoy chucking it about from time to time.

Neither. A Macan is better than both of them.

More modern, better drive, hardly any smaller.

....but if you want a big lump of shiny metal on the drive, just flip a coin.

Cheap shot, they're markedly different.

OP by Range Rover do you mean the Range Rover Sport and hence the SVR or the Full Fat Range Rover which can be had with a s/c engine also.

New or used - if used what kind of age ?

Neither, honestly.

The Porsche SUV's simply don't do it for me, The LR's do but they can be stolen really easily thanks to unsecured keyless go, and are being, especially in London and Bradford etc.

Audi Q7 is ugly.

That leaves what, Mercedes? G class to expensive and also ugly, so ML63 amg? Probably one of those. If fuel is an issue, X6 M50D please.

Crikey it's a brave man who admits to an X6 being an SUV of choice !

I was similar to OP,fancied something usable but different. I went for an Infiniti FX50. So 5.0 V8 with 400bhp. Handles very well and is nicely specced but best of all you never see another!

Went through this about 3 years ago, tried RRS, FFRR and the Cayenne and.........

Bought a Q7.

For me it offered the best blend of SUV benefits but could still be driven round a corner with a bit of pace - the differences between comfort and dynamic was markedly noticeable whereas in the other it wasn't so pronounced. Looks wise, the spec makes a huge difference between looking st and looking pretty good.

I'd recommend a back to back test drive - even if just to eliminate it (which was what I was trying to do!)

I have just bought a 4.2 Supercharged FFRR. At the budget I was looking at I didn't trust the Cayennes that I found.
I love the way it looks and drives etc. It does lean but I don't care. In Sheffield I'm getting around 14mpg :-D

They handle the miles well and just make sure it's been looked after.

You need a 4x4 in Sheffield just for the hills and pot holes

Used both extensively & id be going FFRR.

Cayenne is very bouncy in normal day to day use & I only ever found it comfortable 4 up with luggage.

FFRR just seems to do it all without advertising it, if you get my drift.

As an aside, I also found the "sport" seats in the Porsche unpleasant on a drive to Portugal.

ETA. Not sure why anyone would suggest a Macan is close in size..... It's not ime!

In that case I'd take the FFRR every day. Cayenne will be faster and sharper to drive but they're ugly and fairly depressing to sit in IMHO. Parents still have their old 2006 4.2 S/C as it's still a great car and has little real value with 120k on the clock and a few digs. It's like a big comfy mobile armchair. In some ways I prefer it to the new one, particularly the ride!
