So, I have owned some great sounding cars. These have included several TVRs including a Griff 500 with almost straight pipes, quite a few 911s with PSEs and my most epic sounding car was a Granturismo MC Shift. The thing is it was very rare that I heard any of these cars at full chat from outside, but that was ok as the sounded pretty good from inside, particularly the Granturismo. I now have a 997 GTS with sharkwerks centre box that sounds pretty good from inside but I wouldn't describe it as epic. However this weekend I had the chance to hear it from another car (997.2 C2S with PSE) on several fly pasts and wow! The car sounded incredible, a 911 race car tone and a lot louder than I perceived. Also when I swapped back and listened to the C2S that sound pretty epic also, if not quite as throaty as the sharkwerks equipped car.

I recommend to any of you who don't know how your car really sounds (but are into such things) is get a trusted mate to do some fly pasts for you. You may well be surprised and pleased!

And BTW stationary revving doesn't do it as things seem to change a lot when the engine is under load.

You'e right, defo need to be under load!

That's the one thing about 911s, all the noise is behind you! The only time i felt a 911 was loud enough was when i had my GT3 on straight pipes. I felt it was just right, but once a mate of mine actually had to pull over because he couldn't bear it be behind me due to the intensity of the noise.

common issue with most owners moaning about how quite a car is inc cars like the GT4, but really they are bloody loud.

My 996 turbo has some sort of sport pipes. The only time you get an inkling of quite how savage it sounds is if you accelerate through a tunnel or under a bridge.

Have Cargraphic silencers on my 996, always wind the windows down driving throught tunnels or where there are walls either side!

Been told it sounds great from a following car, only ever heard it being driven by somebody else once, did sound good.

Like you, i had straight from Cat Back pipes on my 996 GT3, once had Rroro follow behind me who had to drop back to a distance due to the thumping he could feel in his chest (resonance or noise pressure i assume, ive also been out in 997 Gt3 following another 997 Gt3 on track and felt the same thing), but going through Hatfield tunnel you could feel the sound pressure building up.

Also, despite it being worthy of an ASBO, alot of people loved the sound it produced

Tunnels are great, but still don't do these cars justice if you're in your car (even a convertible). The only real way is a drive by or fly past. May Doppler does have a role to play!

Whilst I like the sound of my GT2 on a Tubi, and in the past a rather nosier fabspeed system, I really miss the sound of a V10 liberated by an Eisenmann system. This clip is just how my E63 M6 used to sound

I was told my 991 GT3 sounded good at Brands this Monday;
sport exhaust on ( no worrying the noise police either!), max RPM in 3rd & 4th, up to the limiter, before braking into paddock hill.
sounded quite nice from inside the car too !
