Hi guys,

I was wondering if someone would be able to assist me diagnose a fault.
I have a 56 plate 1.6 Diesel Ford Cmax. Done 115,000 miles.
Last week my wife noticed that as she accelerated (I think in second) the car just cut out but the lights on the dash didn't come on until completely stopped. Started the car up again and fine drove for a week no problems.
The same thing happened to me again yesterday twice, not hard acceleration just steady and it wouldn't accelerate and had died, no lights on dash.

Has anyone experienced similar? Or could point me in the direction of how to fault find? I have so far spent a lot of money on this car repairing it, New Clutch & DMF, Turbo, Services etc.

Thanks in advance

Kieran

I have a very cheap reader and it says P2002 which I believe is Diesel Particulate Filter, however I am not sure my car actually has one?

Just checked and this is an old code not cleared out.
Also, this only seems to be happening at 3000 revs in 2nd gear. Could be oxygen sensor or something ECU related?

Probably overboosting of some sort.

You'd need a competent person with a proper diagnostic scanner to see what is happening when the problem occurs.

Although if the fault is not something you can easily replicate...that does make life harder.

You also dont make it clear if the cut out was a total engine cut out/shutdown, or just a big power loss.

Complete power cut off, when it's happened, it's like the car no longer wants to accelerate (because it's shut off, and a few seconds later, the lights come on the dash board. Turn the key again and it works fine.
I've taken it out again this evening, and I can get it to happen each time 2nd gear at 3000rpm.

Complete power cut as in all dash instruments etc turn off ? lights ? rev counter ? speedo ?

IMO that could be very serious and dangerous on many levels, as opposed to a simple engine fault. That sounds more like a major wiring problem, as if something is shorting out with a potential fire risk.

I would agree with Stevie that seems to be more a total loss off electrics rather than an engine problem, I would suggest starting at the fuse box and working back looking aall the multi plugs in the loom for loose connection or signs o corrosion or overheated connectors, cant be more specific sorry.

Hi. Did you mamave to figure this out last year. Having a very similar issue on my 2009 focus 16 tdci. Engine will cut out on acceleration close to 3000rpm onle happens on hard acceleration. Hradlights and dashlighs remains on. No error lights or engine lights come on. O can't restart the engine until it comes to a halt then it is ok again....

Had exactly this on my 2007 Focus recently: under hard acceleration around 3000 rpm felt a loss of power. Clutch down, revs fell to zero & needed ignition off then back on again to restart.

Like you, no warning lights or messages displayed when running. Scanned using forscan & a couple of codes found relating to low fuel pressure.

Had the fuel filter replaced & all's well again. smile

yea did read a few sites mentioning fuel filter. I still need to check error codes.

How much did you pay may I ask? and was it from the main dealer?

Will look to get it replaced - Think it can be a DIY job too. Will investigate

That's about what I paid - pretty ridiculous really. Seems to come with a water sensor/heating element as a complete unit.

I looked at DIY-ing as well but after doing a bit of research, these engines don't have a priming bulb so you will need a handheld vacuum pump to prime it. Even then, some people on the Ford forums used one, still couldn't start the engine & then had to have a tow start to clear the air out!

I'd have thought it should be no more than 30 mins/1 hour labour at a competent garage.

Bloody hell, £55 for a fuel filter and it doesn't even self-bleed! Balls to that.

There should never be a need to tow a vehicle to start after a filter change. That's just bad workmanship !
