Hi. My gearbox has a damaged second gear synchromesh (courtesy of a previous owner) which needs fixing, but my local BMW indy doesn't 'do' gearboxes himself and he can't find a local transmission specialist which is prepared to repair the gearbox. The only quote I've had is for a complete rebuild of the entire 'box for around £600.

The damaged 'box was replaced with a secondhand unit but the secondhand 'box has a really noisy first gear so I want to get the original 'box repaired (which also has much lower mileage - 33k compared with 90k).

Does anyone know of a decent transmission repairer who could do the job?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Are you looking for a good gearbox specialist or someone to do it cheaply? I ask because £600.00 doesn't sound like a lot of money for a rebuilt 'box.
Where are you based?

@ Littlepete: I'm in Somerset. Don't need the entire gearbox rebuilding though as it's only second gear synchromesh that seems to have an issue. Also have spent £3.5k on the car in the last 6 months and so I'm not keen to throw more money at it than I have to at the moment!

@blade7: How many miles has the 'box done, and are there any issues/noises with it? Also where are you located?

Cheers,

Ben

I'm in Cambridgeshire. I don't remember how many miles it's done. I bought it in good faith for a spare a few years ago when I had a 328.

OK cheers. Will keep in mind if I can't get the original box fixed for sensible money.

No worries. Thinking back I gave £50 for it, not looking to make anything on it now. Same gearbox used in the 3.0 M3 I think.
