BXE and BLS definitely have a habit of throwing rods out.

Best to google though, as there are many threads on the topic around the world

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=112...

From a thread over on one of the tdi forums, it almost sounds like the pistons are the problem, as some regions have more issues than others...and it seems that in most cases the rod actually pulls out of the piston with pin intact, which then leads to major failure with the road breaking afterwards.

Either way...catastrophic.

A friend did his, and replaced it with a BKC I think it was, which was almost a complete straight swap and was not renowned for the same fate.

As for a DPF..get under it and look. Newer cars more likely to have than older, although no sure what age they were introduced.

I've got a 2006 VW Jetta with the BKD engine. Keep the oil changed regularly and it's fine. No DPF on cars of this age.
2.0 tdi did have crank or oil pump problems but that was a different version with balancer shafts that was fitted to Passats and A4/5 Audis. No balancer shafts in the Golf/A3/Octavia version.

I think a DPF became standard on the common rail engines late in 2007/2008.
