so out on a drive today and all going fine, until suddenly my speedo started showing approximately double the speed I was actually travelling at (unless 140 mph really is that quiet!)

Any clues as to what might be causing it and how to fix it?

I'm assuming its an electronic speedo (I didn't build the car) as I can't see any way a cable driven speedo could do that

TIA

Cant assume anything...get in there and have a look.

Could be cable, could be electric etc, and as a kit car...it really could be anything !

Thats typical characteristics of an inductive speed sensor that has too bigger air gap or is failing scratchchin you will need to get under neath the car to see whats going on depending weather its mounted to the prop-shaft or a drive-shaft

It could be an electronic sensor on the gearbox... Did you get a build manual/diary with the car? that could have information on the speedo used and how it is installed.
