Hi there

Would be grateful for some feedback on the following. I purchased a 2013 VW Up a year ago and it's always had what can be best described as a noisy transmission, particularly under load. It sounds harsh and rough on acceleration. A noisy gearbox seems to be a common complaint for the UP, and when VW inspected it they said "it's normal behaviour" for this car, although it does seem that some are noisier than others when you read the Up forum. There is a particular issue with some which I think is called bearing rollover, and when you rev the car at idle with the clutch engaged/up it rattles.

My car, however, does the following -

1) Rough sound on start up which is really noticeable when the clutch is depressed (the opposite of what VW call bearing rollover as this occurs with the clutch up) - If you follow this link you can hear the recording, after 13 seconds I depress the clutch and the noise can be heard.

2) As previously mentioned, a harsh gravely sound on acceleration. I can't imagine this is normal as the UP got decent reviews, and mine sounds worse than an old Pug diesel on a cold morning.

3) There is a noticeable gearbox whine which starts around 60-65mph, then goes away when you reach 70mph, again under load.

If there are any knowledgeable gearbox/clutch experts in I would be really keen to hear your thoughts. When the car is idling with the clutch disengaged, what if anything is turning? Is the gearbox completely disengaged from the engine.

Thanks

Tim
