Afternoon,

Merc A150 W169 model 2006 year.

120,000 miles well worn not worth spending huge amounts on it.

It is noisy on initial start up a couple of seconds then goes away.

I believe it runs a 0w30 oil, would it be worth using a slightly "thicker" oil 10w40 ?

or is just a tired 10 year old little engine.

As a little car I would recommend one to anybody, still on the original clutch, other than servicing I have only ever changed the CV joints.

From what you describe, I would assume it to be an engine with hydraulic tappets & if that is trhe case & it is only a few seconds, I really wouldn't worry about it.

give "Wynns hydraulic valve-lifter treatment" a whirl.

A 10w-40 is thicker at the same temperature than a 0w-30......thus will actually take longer to fill the tappets, and the noise will be worse, stick to the weight recommended by Mercedes.

I'd rather try a couple of oil and filter changes first - does the treatment meet the required specs for the engine oil? Easier to just do a few short-interval oil drops.

Timing chains stretch on those too.
