A thread I have just replied to got me thinking of my most memorable car moment. Whilst at uni I bought a dark green jaguar xj6 in the middle of exams from a guy in bootle, Liverpool for £500. My plan was to use it for the summer to drive to placmements and work. For the short time I owned it I had some great times. The most memorable was driving back home from work with the windows down, in the summer sun on a B road overtaking a line of cars with the car locked in to 3rd on the gearbox. The engine sounded glorious and I will never forget it.

What's yours?

My most memorable is letting my mate drive my car because I had a couple of drinks and him promptly smashing it. This was definitely not my favourite moment though!

Going to the RAC Rally at Sutton Park and Weston Park in freezing cold weather when I was little - some of those events were what got me hooked on motorsport and set me on the path I am still on today. I clearly remember the split second I looked directly into Colin McRae's eyes as he charged around a corner towards me at Weston Park in one of the early 90s events - magic.

My most memorable car moment... is not driving my own car on an amazing road or letting somebody else drive it, it's seeing a Porsche 918 whilst in traffic and trying to keep up with it when we hit the motorway.. within 10 seconds on the open motorway he was gone to never be seen again hehefrown

So many it's hard to pick one!

Highlights are, taking my new clio 16v (the old nicole/papa model) up to Glencoe one quiet morning going hill walking with some mates.

Chasing a couple of motorcyclists from Braemar upto the Glenshee ski centre in my focus RS.

Doing an EVO track evening at Bedford in my 350z, getting some hot laps with Perry the Stig McArthy then driving straight home to Dunfermline afterwards over the deserted A68, getting home at 2am. Shattered but elated.

Driving through the 'sma glen' one evening in my mx5. Road was deserted, I had the roof down, there was a light drizzle, it was awesome.

2 passenger flying laps round the ring last year in a 4 door M3, always thought the M3 was bit of poser car, not anymore absolute respect for that car now, and the super cool german driver was epic. THE best thing i have ever done in a car.

Too many from which to pick one: lapping the 'Ring in multiple times over several decades in many different cars, navigating a night rally in a pre-war Sunbeam in winter, being told by David Sutton to give his Sport quattro 'the beans', lapping Donington in a Super Tourer (as a passenger unfortunately), a 'full chat' drive the length of Germany in my GTI 16V, having a whale of a time in a Formula Ford in the rain, taking a series of B-road bends 'just right' in my Riley. Loads more, some of which were fleeting moments of driving pleasure but to pick one - impossible.

My most embarrassing which obviously makes it memorable was reversing my 1965 Mini past a lamppost with the drivers door open loser

Yup... Big ginger bird I used to work with in the back of a K11 Micra, 'twas my first.

Asides from that... Same Micra (my first car) about a month after getting it driving From Dumbarton (where I stayed with my dad) up to Tighnabruaich (Western Highlands about an hour north of Dunoon) to pick up my mum to drive her to a big family get together in Glasgow.

Well I didn't 100% know the way as I had only ever done the journey as a passenger brought my GPS equipped phone, without thinking that, this being the Highlands, I lost all signal about 30minutes into the 2 hour journey. So I got lost. As I was trying to find my way the weather got from bad (sleety ice rain in Dumbarton) to worse (full on Blizzard as I got to Arrochar). The A83 is a very steep windy road leading to Dunoon, I passed A LOT of stuck vans and trucks, my little 900kg Micra with its skinny winter tyres (Rovelos I think, not good winter tyres but winters nonetheless) just trundled on, this is where I should have turned back.

Took the Dunoon turn off after cresting the rest and be thankful on the A83, this is where the busy trunk roads turn into the back 'o' beyond, with worsening conditions I was still trundling along with about 5cm of laid snow by this point. Well it was on the quiet Dunoon road which I started to get stuck, the road undulates over little hills and before every crest I was losing traction, but being 17 I pushed on, got fully stuck just before Strachur. Was pushed out by a nice bloke who pulled up behind me in an L200, managed to just make it to the bottom of my mum's street in Tighnabruaich after a 4 hour, 25 mile drive...

Walked up my mum's street (you can't drive up it in winter without a 4x4, the whole family now knows this biggrin) picked her up and started the journey home. Took a wrong turn leaving Tighnabruaich which led me over the mountain track to Dunoon (beautiful road in the summer, fking impassable in snow, which was up to the Micra's bumpers at this point), got stuck there... Twice. Between both of us pushing and a bit of luck we managed to get to Dunoon, then back to Strachur and the, now plowed, A83. The latter of which was terrifying, pitch black in a blizzard, the lorries where moving now, nearly got wiped out by a fishtail one coming in the other direction down the hill.

Got stuck again on the stupid little 'shortcut' I always insisted on taking between Arrochar and Garelochhead again with a bit of pushing we got free, was an uneventful slog along lovely lowland A roads after that.

And that's the story of how a 4 hour trip to pick up my mum turned into 8 fking hours of driving and a couple of near death experiences.

A few spring tio mind: le mans 2002. wasnt going to go, then decieded to go last minute, driving from home on the saturday. Got the very early tunnel, and started out. There didnt seem to be any vehciles on the french roads, and I got braver and braver. Its the only time I have ever gone flat out (in a Porsche 944) and got the Le Mans via the old roads before 11am.

In the 944 Turbo, driving back from a girls house in Hastings back throgh kent, using all the roads, all the performance. It was magnificant.

Finally, the first drive in my Aston. The realisaytion of 12 years hard work and saving.

so many to choose from, most near death experiences off road in in my soft top s1 landy, however I currently have a trophy160 mgf and endure the daily "hairdressers car" type comments from my colleagues. best moment was hearing one of said colleagues scream and cry when he asked for a lift one night, happened to take a b road I know very well! the insults appear to have stopped now, replaced by "if you see one come up cheap, let me know."

I have two memorable moments;

1) Taking my tuned CLK63 over the Mountain part of the TT/Manx GP course with my brother in his tuned M3 in hot pursuit.

2) Making swift progress across Central London one evening in my Maserati GranTurismo Sportline with a Larini exhaust fitted the soundtrack really was something. smile

Good thread!

A couple spring to mind...

1) Rental scooter on a Greek Island, 2 up with my now wife, chasing/following a German on a 'Superbike' through miles of fantastic roads before getting past him in the entry to a hairpin.

2) First time at Brands Hatch after meeting Terry Rymer (Kawaski Superbike Rider) and being encouraged along to a track day.

I'll use the term 'moment' loosely here and say the last proper drive in my M5 before selling it.

Early morning, sun out, deserted road and stunning scenery from Bridge of Cally to Grantown-on-Spey.

Bliss.

Kingston to Glasgow, about 30 years ago in a Manta GTE (lowered with a free flow manifold and air filter).

Morning of 24th Dec, everyone else must have travelled the day before.

I spied a mini meet of patrol cars in a service station and figured that if they are all there, then they can't be looking for me.

Result? Less than 5 hours. Epic. Impossible to do today.

Most memorable moment was coming home from my first trip to Le Mans (Classic) in 2010. Was in a convoy with four other cars and caught up with another convoy of best part of a dozen cars...and everything in that combined group was something that would get a nod from most PHers. Can't remember the entire lot but was certainly the following:

BMW M5 (mine)
Jaguar Sovereign V12
Porsche 997 C4S
Audi RS6 Avant
Jaguar XKR
Bentley Continental GT
Porsche 964
Ford GT(!!!)
Ferrari 360
2x Cobra replicas

Best 20-odd miles of my life...

Not sure if it's my favourite but the memory that sticks in my head also involves a Manta GTE and crashing loudly through a hedge and into a field, the headlights illuminated the branches and it all seemed to go in slow motion until we stopped. Driving my Alfa GTV on the coastal roads in Ayrshire or a Mini Cooper S JCW round the mountain roads of Capetown were much better
