Someone mentioned on another thread getting gifted an old Fiesta, I was given my grandads Metro and the kids used it to hammer round a field on my in laws farm, my father in law asked me to get shut to make space, so I stuck it on Retro Rides and it lived to fight another day in that it ended up MOT'd again.

I know a girl whose dad died, she had his manky Cortina and spend hundreds, if not thousands getting it bodged.

I know a chap who has loads of cars and bikes, has his dads old Golf GTI, never really uses it.

Anyone else inherited a car ?

It seems kind of a bit difficult as you feel like you should keep it, but might not want to, but you feel bad getting rid ?

In the late 80s, I was given a 1972 Alfa Romeo GT junior by a nice man I met on the street.

I currently have my mums yaris sitting on the driveway as she recently gave up driving, 17 years old, 51k miles on it. Mot'd to November but unlikely to pass another due to rust. Was going to drive about in it for a few months whilst between cars but picked up a car sooner than expected. It hasn't done more than 1000 miles a year since she bought it about 14 years ago.
1 rear spring has a bit snapped off it and one rear damper is leaking but the rear axle is really badly rusted so looks like it'll be a nightmare involving snapped bolts to change them frown

My dad's Skoda Fabia automatic became available a few years ago when he gave up driving. I'd have taken it over myself but for the fact that it made me feel like a pensioner every time I drove it.

My dad's mate died when I was 16 and left me his Rover 200. I drove it after passing my test until someone crashed into me and it was written off. There was nothing wrong with it apart from the deep smell of stale cigarettes (no prizes for guessing what killed the previous owner)

Inherited my Dads Alpina B5 just over a year ago after he lost his battle with cancer. Still get the feeling of him being around when I drive it and often chat to him whilst doing so driving

about 3 years ago we inherited my wife's aunts 2006 Renault Clio (1.5dci) when she passed away. The Clio had supposedly been "regularly maintained" by her local garage, needed about £1000.00 to get it through it's first MOT with us!! kept it for a couple of years and then it went for scrap.
at the other end of the scale I recently inherited my uncle's immaculate 2004 2.4 Mondeo auto, spotless inside and out with 4 new tyres, new alternator and battery! sold to a Friend for £1000.00.

Worked out well for me! I had a job at a pub in the holidays and I told my dad that I was working late to save for a car, when I was just taking the cash in hand and spending it back in the pub and then stumbling home. Effectively working for beer

Second car was Grandmothers old Saab 99

Had my mother's old Volvo 265 GLE for a year or two at university after a couple of sisters in law had had it

Only joking, just getting in before the usual anti Rover stuff.

I was 18 when I "inherited" a Daf 33 from an elderly couple in the village when they gave up driving. It didn't go as the centrifugal clutch shoes had seized due to lack of use.

Got it running and used it for a while. It was a bit slow (and I was used to driving a Mini!)

I inherited a Fiesta, when it worked it was a peach, really worked well and could be chucked around the corners really nicely. Engine was sweet all the way to the red line, I managed to get 18k miles a year once, no commuting, only weekend drives.

Was a very sad day when I had to take it to the scrappers due to rust, but boy it was rusty! Also cost me about £300 a month in suspension parts, then brakes, then clutch (ok, that one was my fault).

Engine never gave any problems at all, original battery, really comfy seats, just too much rust.

Every time my parents buy a new car, I "inherit" their old one. They're usually Volvos, a 740, a 940, several 850s, and being delivered this weekend is an XC90....I don't even like Volvos that much!

I was supposed to inherit my mans MK3 fiesta. She had it from new! It was an 89/ g reg car. She only ever used it to go shopping and back, it only had 28k on it, though it did have 2 clutches in that time!biggrin It was serviced every year without fail and kept in a garage when she came home from shopping. This thing was a proper time warp car, absolutely mint.

My sister was going through a rough patch so my nan told her to use the fiesta for a couple of months until she was sorted then give it to me.

She royally fked that car inside 8 weeks. Dragged it through bushes so the one side of the car was covered in scratches through to the metal. The other side had been dented and scratched by a gate post, The inside of the car was now covered in coffee stains, food wrappers and fag butts.

The fuel pump packed up so rather than spend the minimal amount to replace it, the stupid scrapped it.frown

I went absolutely ape st. Her excuse? It's was only an old fiesta, it wasn't worth anything anyway. I'd never hit a woman though that was the closest I ever came to doing it. My nan never spoke to her again either. tt.

My mum has a 1994 1.4 auto Clio four door, has only 40k n change in good nick and she's spent a good bit on it over the years. She's 85 now, and whilst always been a good driver and enjoys it, she often talks about stopping.

Boring I know, but as an additional car, I'd have it, good shed runaround and I know it's history

My son-in-law has recently been left an old Rolls Royce. I've given to understand it's not really worth anything.

Friend of mine is a farmer, in his quest to have a boy to take over the farm, he ended up with 4 daughters. They have each inherited a silver VW Polo from each other as they have reached driving age. It has done intergalactic mileage, and bears the scars of all four daughters, and is still going strong. I'm not sure it has ever been cleaned though, inside or out.

If my parents gave me a cash windfall of £500-£3000 every time they changed car I'd have trouble accepting it.
