Hi all, I have wanted to get into cars for a while and have suddenly started trying/ reading mags and watching shows etc. But I don't really understand much. So how could I learn about e.g. Why a car is better than another , understanding horsepower, and have a general discussion about it. Basics really wink Thanks smile

YouTube should help with everything. Too many people on YouTube to help get you started on any topic involving cars or engineering.

As a starter, BMW's are good cars. They are powerful and are well built luxury vehicles, which is why so many people like them. There are some BMW's for those who don't know too much but those ones normally have the wrong engines (2.0L 4 cylinders). The iconic BMW engine is the straight 6 and they have been doing it for most of their life. It is an amazing engine design and they are amazing cars. I love them, hopefully you should develop an interest in them too

What shows are you watching? Motortrend is great as are the related engine masters, hotrod garage and dirt everyday shows.

Watch topics you like and research stuff that's interesting and you want to know more about.

What sort of cars take your fancy, new, classic, super car, could be just a brand you have an affinity for.
I've always been fascinated by them so never really looked at it the way you are. This place is a good place to start.
Problem with YouTube is there's a lot of pricks with nice cars on it, it's hard to find the good content. There's a good thread at the top of the page with YouTube links on though.

Go karting, do a track day, get some instruction, try a single seater experience, try a supercar experience... even drive on a wet muddy farm track, try reversing a trailer... in other words, forget the theory and the numbers! Find out what you like about driving, what interests you as a gut feeling, then come back and find out why!

YouTube - loads and loads and loads of content, everything from old episodes of car shows such as Top Gear and Fifth Gear, to regular youtubers vlogging about their current cars, technical videos on how to change mechanical components, bodywork specialistic, detailers, car modification, documentary films, historical footage, car reviews, dashcam compilations...

PH - just about everything under the sun must have been covered here. Find a section of the forum you like, whether it's here in GG or maybe a more specialist section further down. Find a good thread and have a look around. Bear in mind that it's a forum, so open to much interpretation...

AutoTrader - have a browse about, you can learn a lot about cars by looking at examples for sale.

Try to get into cars with an open mind, also it's worth thinking about whether you're more interested in cars themselves or the driving aspect.
