Check that your thermostat is operating correctly, my punto had an airlock and overheating caused my thermostat to jam in the cold position, this made it overheat and idle very badly... if water is leaking out of your pressure cap ( this is where mine was leaking) it is most probably the thermostat, as pressure would build until the cap gave way.

Hi,
well my wifes X reg 1.2 8V Punto has pretty much the symptoms that Kitt described (3 years ago); so I'm interested to hear what he found out in the end. Also more info from Tikila... (sounds like a cheaper fix!)

Summary symptoms:
3/4 stalled reversing off drive
4/4 stalled & misfired
5/4 stalled reversing off drive, misfiring
PM 'Injection system failure' light intermittent
running lumpy 3 cyls?
fuel smell under bonnet - gone when warm and smoother
Ran another 2 miles twice - seems happier when warm
6/4 PM 'engine coolant too hot' within 4 miles, heater cold, light out
ok on return hours later, heater warm
7/4 AM not used, NO coolant in header, under pressure, coolant returned from bottom pipe & smelt petrolly
PM Some mayo in oil filler cap (but it has a hard life of very local intermittent journeys, EXCEPT for two longer unstressed trips of 2*25 and 2*17 miles on the previous SUnday and Monday). Oil level normal and clear though a bit thick with the cold I suppose. Coolant at normal level.
Ran engine for 5 minutes - a bit lumpy, some pressure out of oil filler cap; engine started to idel faster (about 1200?) so I turned it off.
Found that the coolant was now pushed up to the filler neck when pressure released. It hadn't got very hot, so after 5 minutes I released the radiator bleeder (top RHS of rad) and the coolant returned to its normal level, with a release of air from the bleeder.

I'm guessing I now have an airlock (heater matrix?) and hope the car will survive 3 miles to the garage for a proper look.

Any thoughts or advice much appreciated. Cheers Phileng.
