My brother has a peugeot 407 2.2 Petrol on a 54 plate. He bought it just over a year ago. The car has been back and forth to the dealer nine times in that period with a recurrent oil consumption problem that they have not sorted. The exhaust has a blue tinge to it even on tickover and leaves an oily patch on the floor where the exhaust gasses hit the ground if left idling. There are no oil patches left on the ground under the engine when the car is parked. This led me to believe that the oil consumption is caused internally and not by a leaking gasket which is what the dealer has been trying to fix with various sealants etc. Now that the warranty on the car has run out, they have done a compression test and found that the problem is internal though they have not said what the problem is yet (I'm assuming that it's pistons or valve seals).

The dealer now wants to charge my bro' for further investigation work which he is refusing to do. The dealer is standing by the fact the car is out of warranty despite this fault being reported to them shortly after the car was purchased from them and has not been rectified and Peugeot themselves are not interested. Oil is being consumed at upto 2 lires per 100 miles!

Can anyone let me know if

A/ this is a common Peugeot engine problem?

B/ where does my bro stand legally, as I recon that as the car was faulty when purchased and the fault has not even been diagnosed correctly bearing in mind the number of times the car has been to the dealers to be sorted.

c/ recommended course of action?

d/ would the amount of oil consumed affected other components that should be replaced ie Catalytic convertor under warranty?

Looking forward to some replies.

Nigel

With an oil consumption of : 2 lires per 100 miles

The problem is very likely to be the piston rings or a broken liner (piston runs in the liner..)

I would check if he has any lind of legal cover - he might have one thru work or his car insurance .. but either way you may need an independant engineer to access the issue.

It will just be a compression test / blead down test and chemically check the water for exhaust gases (faulty head gasket)..

Will probably only cost around £200 ..

The insurance company will fight the case for you..
