Hi,

I haver recently had a replacement Re-con engine fitted to my 2001 celica 190.

I picked the car up from Birmingham on Saturday 23/2/2008 and drove 250 miles to Newcastle. The car seemed fine but i was told to take it easy to start with as it was llike a new engine. Due to this i couldn't take the revs high enough to see if the lift was working.

While the garage had my car they told me that the vvti sensors needed replaced and the O2 sensors as the ones off my previous engine were broken. These were replaced and as i say the car seemed ok driving home.

On Sunday 24/2/2008 i started the car to find the engine management light on. I took it to local garage today 25th and put it on diagnostic machine and it didn't bring up specefic codes. It only brought up on screen (Manufacturers specifications) which was not really any help. The light was cleared and after about a mile it came back on...

I have now had the car to toyota and they have told me that it is the lift sensor.

Does anyone have any sort of information on this.

Also the engine used to rev over 8000 but now only revs to 7000 the limiter cuts in..

Any help would be appreciated

I am no expert but it does sound like a sensor problem. The engine will hit the limiter of it is cold etc at around 7000 just before the power cams. My suggestion would be to take it back to where the engine was fitted and demand that they sort it. This shouldn't be too big a problem to fix judging by the description that you have given.

Hi, i also have a vvtli celica. This exact problem happened to me just 4 months ago, the lift sensor isn't the root cause of the problem. The problem is actually mechanical. Theres a small 'pin' that allows the cams to go into lift which can become worn ( especially if like me you keep the revs high ). Its easy to replace and dosn't cost much. Go to your local toyota garage and they'll fix it no problem.
Don't take that as gospel mind, however because what your describing is exactly what happened to me i'd put my money on that 'pin' being the problem.
