Light on dash comes on intermittently ,turn ignition of/on light goes of .Take the car 19tdi 2004 130hp to gearbox specialist He say's it's a common fault £300 labour £600 for control box as sensor a small part of the control box can not be fixed . So has any one else had this problem and is it right that you have to have the whole control box replaced .

I'd say that more than likely he is giving you a worst case scenario and that may not actually be the fault.

While the range sensor or control module may be at fault it could just as easily be a corroded harness.

To 'pin out' the harness and check resistances is a fundamental diagnostic necessity, and just swapping parts out is crazy unless you are made of money.

You are better off taking the car to a franchised dealer where they have a far better chance of knowing what they are doing.
