Recently fitted Emerald Management to my car. A friend did all the mapping via his laptop, everything was fine.

I got home and have tried to connect my Laptop, using the same Serial Cable my friend used. The software is saying there is No connection to the ECU. I tried changing the COM Port settings on the Software but made no difference.

With the ignition on the ECU Light is RED. With the engine running it is GREEN.

Any help will be appreciated

The red light goes to green to tell you that the crank sensor has locked onto the rotation of the crank.

Are you using a USB to serial converter as they don't always work properly. Also the connectors are marked up so make sure that the ends of the cable are connected to the ECU and laptop correctly. Also the ECU needs to be powered up to allow the the laptop to connect to it.

I am using a Serial to Serial cable. Both ends in the right place. I literally unplugged the mappers laptop, drove home and tried to plug mine in.

I have tried with the ignition on/off and the car running. I couldn't get it to work. Am thinking its a dodgey laptop connection. Will try with another one tomorrow hopefully. Thanks for your help

When I use Landgas at work we have a Baude rate set up in the governor and also on the laptop. If these numbers aren't the same, 9600 - 9600 etc, then it wont connect. Also sometimes I need to try and connect 2 or 3 times.

Hope you get it sorted as problems like this frustrate the hell out of me at work haha.

Dave!

It's worth noting that the PC and Emerald software must be up and running before you turn the ignition on..

I think the laptop is definately the issue, as the ECU and cable have been proven to work.

I did a quick google on this Baud rate its it seems like a possible reason. Laptop is not in the best of conditions anyway. Will try to see what the Emerald Govenor is set to [not quite sure what it is but sure I can figure it out]

how would I go about changing this setting?

Thanks for the help so far.

There are some tests in the Megasquirt instructions which I think would be valid here to check that your port is connecting.

With the lead plugged in short pins 2 & 3 together on the other end of the cable.
On the laptop go
Start/programs/accessories/communications/hyperterminal
click on the red telephone and enter a file name, 'test' will do then OK then OK again.
The dialogue box is where you would change the baud rate but don't worry about that now hit OK again and you will be in a text type screen.
Type any letters....if they appear on screen then your connection is OK as what you typed went down the wire (2) and back up the other wire (3).

You will need to find what baud rate the emerald wants, MS uses 9600 and MS2 uses 115200 so it is important.

When you know the required settings you can create your connection using a meaningful name rather than 'test' and agree to save it when asked.

Steve just read your reply, will have a play with it now.

I just tried a second laptop and a 'Add New Hardware' wizard came up. Closed it as I assumed emerald software would take over. Still no-ECU link

I tried the typing thing as you said on both laptops and got nothing. I would say its looking like a dodgey lead although one of the laptops did pick up the ECU in the form of 'new hardware'. And the lead was used for mapping.

Mine was doing the same thing .. even tested the lead for contineuoty ..

It was just not having the software running with the map when turning on the ECU..

Have you checked that yet !

As far as I know I have tried all sorts of combinations. ECU and Laptop Off/on with cable plugged in/not plugged in, Car running, Ignition On/off.

What is the proper method of connecting the 2. Ignition On, Laptop On, Cable Connected, THEN open Emerald software?

Paraphrasing from the Emerald Manual
NO ECU LINK status appears when there is no power to the ECU or the coms lead is not plugged in.

There is power as the ECU light is on. Which means the 2 devices aren't talking to each other.

I noticed my ECU power was linked to my Immobiliser controlled ignition live. Although I have tried to take a reading with the engine running so this would have ruled out this as the cause

make sure your serial port / comport on the laptop is set to com 1 ( in control panel somewhere) if you're using a newer laptop ( ie this century) they tend to assign com1 to a USB port

Spoke to Dave and he thinks its the other way round. Old software [like the ones on their site] cant access the K3, only the earlier M3Ds.

Does anybody have the install file. Already made a post in the caterham section
