My 2002 Astra 1.6 16v has 75k on it, and has just recently developed quite an annoying rattle/tapping.

It only happens when its revved over 3000rpm onwards, but stops if I hold it at say 4000rpm.
The lads at the local dealer have told me its the flaps in the inlet manifold that are worn, and reckoned only replacement would cure it!!!! eek

What would cause this wear, anyone had anything similar?

Hello there.
There are no flaps in your manifold and it is most likely worn cam/followers as these engines are well known for it.
May i surgest an oil change and if that does not help new cam/followers or second hand head.

Thanks Rob,

Bugger about the flaps!
The original analysis certainly backed up the thought of flap wear - the noise is definitely coming from the back of the engine near the throttle body and becomes more apparent over 3000rpm.
But this as you say could be the cam - DAMN!
Worth doing the oil change anyway - can't hurt can it.

Cheers,

andy

Hi There

If you have the Z16XEP it will have have a swirl port and a second port going to the second inlet valve this second port has a close off valve in the inlet manifold.
These valves are open and closed at driving circumstances to provide more power in lower and higher revs and give better fuel consumption.

These valves can ware out and cause noise, in a worse case scenario you will have to replace the manifold including the valves in the manifold, but it might be a case of just replacing the valves on their own, they do tend to wear out.

I hope this is of any help to you.

Thanks, for that, but I've just got the Z16xe - which I now think is 'flapless', si the noise must be something else now. But thanks anyway!

Just been back to the dealer.

Its not got flaps or butterflies as such - I was expecting butterflies in the actual inlet ports but its got one main 'flap' inside, towards the bottom of the manifold.

I've been quoted £60 - £80 for a breakers one, so thats not too bad at all - specially when compared to the Dealers £479!!!!!!!!!
