Should a new alternator spin freely or have resistance to turning, before fitting to car?

It will spin freely unless it's charging...which would be caused by the regulator putting current through the windings. So, absolutely free spinning if there is nothing connected to the LT side.

Ok, that's made be feel better...

Basically I have a new unit that made clicking resistance when rotated.

This unit had incorrectly orientated mounting points (right-hand instead of left-hand) so I carefully rotated the body with the brushes removed and put it back together.

Now it rotates freely and I'm about to go and fit it!
