for underneath work at home, is there a better alternative to axle stands ? Maybe something that gets the car higher and is a little more secure ? I can see pairs of ramps for sale but firstly you need the wheels on for them and secondly they don't look like they get the car any higher ? They also block access down the sides of the car.

There are some sectional ramps that enable you to remove the main ramp and leave the flat section the wheel sits on: http://www.jtproducts.co.uk/ Haven't used them myself, but it's one approach.

How high do you need ?

With a high lift jack, and suitable stands, I can easily get mine around 2ft off the ground quite safely.

Ramps etc are all good and well...but they dont leave wheels free.

For working at wheels/suspension/brakes it does look good....

Just not so sure on stability at that height !! I wouldnt like to be shaking the vehicle too hard.
It would also need a good sturdy work surface.

but not bad.

It's a lot of money, but you could easily pay a lot more than that for a lift.

I know the OP said not enough room for "a Bradbury" but this has got to be worth considering. I'm not sure how they make a profit at 2k including vat and delivery! I've considered pits, ramps, jacks and many more but IMO the 4 post works best if you can squeeze it in.

I have a 4 poster ramp in my garage. It cost £200 second hand plus another £50 for a single phase motor. I was lucky enough to get it from my local garage who were ripping out their old MOT bay ramps and fitting newer ones. It was a bit daunting at first and I had to make several trips with a big trailer to collect it in pieces and then reassemble it, but it was by far the cheapest way of doing it. Like most people, my garage is nowhere near tall enough to allow me to lift the car right up. I can get it about 4 feet off the ground, but that's a load better than axle stands! I can scoot around under the car, sitting on an old office chair. Worth looking for secod hand garage equipment on Ebay and in mags like Exchange & Mart.
