Hi, hope someone can help.

2004 X-trail 136 DCi, 50000 miles.

The car suffers from loss of power (limp mode) where revs are limited to 2000 when in gear (under load) - will rev ok in neutral. No engine warning lights are present. Sometimes has lumpy idle when cold.

Turning engine off seems to reset the car but the problem is now returning within a few miles, rendering it impractical to drive anywhere involving hills.

I replaced the fuel filter a few days ago, this made no difference.

There is no oil consumption or whining noises & I have also had a fault code diagnostic done today. Told it was definately not the turbo & that the fault code is P0089 (Fuel pressure regulator performance). Suspicion is fuel suction control valve, pressure regulator or fuel pump.

I'm concerned that I could end up replacing component after component as I can't seem to get a definitive diagnosis

Has anyone had this problem rectified, & also can anyone recommend a specialist in London or the south east.

Not sure but from the way it goes it could be either one or both of control valve or fuel pump.

I had this problem with a 2003 Xtrail sport.
On the motorway and suddenly no power, pull over and restart and it's all ok for a while but got worse and more frequent over the next couple of weeks. Took it into nissan dealership. First they tried spraying wd40 on the electical contacts for the accelerator pedal which worked for about a week then the problem came back and stayed back. Couldn't get the car above 25mph.
Returned it to the garage who had it for about 2 weeks, working on it everyday. They changed a different part each day having to wait for new parts to be sent from the supplier, nothing worked.
In the end they told me the only thing left to change was the ECU which would cost about £800 without labour and was non refundable because once it's attached to the engine it adapts to it and cannot be reset. By this point the car had done 160,000 miles. They agreed to a part exchange.
I now have a 2006 SE DCI which has just started to lose power on full throttle, hopefully not as terminal as the last one, it's getting it's fuel filter changed today.

Often diagnosis can be very difficult on diesels ( and a lot of modern engines )

If multiple parts are under suspicion, and known good parts cant be trialed....only option is to start at the cheapest likely suspect, and work up.

Sadly some parts can be coded to the car, which adds extra complications and costs.

I had Nissan duke 15dci 61 reg with p0002 p0089 in it was missing an losing power under loads I replaced fuel pressure regulator and was the same, but when bleeding the system there was a drip from tank to manual pump connection witch turned out to be letting air bubbles into system intern causing fuel pressure fault codes!!
