Granturismo issue :(

My Granturismo started smoking (light grey steam) from under engine.
I stopped after about 3 miles when safe, temp of water on the gauge was rising steadily but I shut it off well before it got to red on the dial. Coolant header tank completely empty when I looked.
I have it on a flat loader now heading to SMDG Performance who are nearby and seem to have a good rep, they serviced it last just before I bought it. Am a bit nervous that the engine may have overheated and got damaged but can I assume that as the water temp never went red that it should be OK once the coolant leak is sorted?

Yep, garage just said they tried to refill but water poured out straight away. They said further overheating unlikely as temp never got to red & didn't drop to zero whilst driving indicating total coolant loss. Fingers crossed & I'll buy a lottery ticket if this can be fixed with a new silicon hose & tank of coolant!
So the shop called, a coolant pipe that goes between the 2 cylinder banks at the back of the engine has burst. New pipe on order along with another one in a similarly un-accessible position for good order's sake. Need to come over from Italy which takes 3 days. Bad news is that the inlet manifold needs to come off to access it. Total labor for job, guy is quoting 5-6 hours @ £85+VAT per hour so I'm looking at probably £800 total including coolant and parts.
Not too bad but quite annoying. They don't think that the engine would have overheated, I'm guessing they'll do a leakdown test once it's all up and running again but I'm less nervous than I was a few days ago.

The impellor bearing on my GranTurismo's waterpump failed, throwing a belt and causing it to overheat - never noticed the temp gauge creeping northwards until the dash lit up and the A/C came blasting on!
Glad your repair was a little cheaper than mine - the above happened on the M62 eastbound, and I live in Cambridgeshire.
