Is there something wrong with my mpg figure...?
Discussion
Dear TheS,
also watch the instantaneous m.p.g. mode. It's interesting (to me, I'm an engineer) to see how it varies with revs/load/throttle position/gear.
When you're up to cruising speed back off just a little and you get a little bit more economy - moves to a leaner part of the map I imagine.
You'll also see how 6th gear makes a big difference.
Teaching my grandmother but watch the road too

Jet

30 is easily achievable on a CV8, with a little care you can get as much as 33! I often get over 400 from a tank full on a decent run.
An 04 VXR should still be able to average high twenties (350+ from a tankfull), I think driving style is the key. No criticism intended of course, it's just a different way of driving in a Holden.

There are two types of owner, (IMHO)An 04 VXR should still be able to average high twenties (350+ from a tankfull), I think driving style is the key. No criticism intended of course, it's just a different way of driving in a Holden.
The ones that add power to try and speed up the movement of the planet... (Jez)
then at the other end of the food chain, theres the "one" that puts it in gear and waits for the planet to take him from A to B

70 litre tank = 15 odd gallons, around town driving 18 Mpg around 270 miles tops, the joys of owning a V8 I'm afraid.
Only long motorway journeys will you see a decent mpg return

18mpg i wish
the day i picked my car up and drove it home it would of come all the way home on a tank of fuel and that was 400 miles.
you dont by a V8 for its good MPG you buy it for the noise and experiance
My GTS being an import is in l/100km. With the conversion to miles it's now l/100miles. Took me 6 months or more to care about Woking it out in to MPG. I felt that if I cared that much to know I probably should have bought a diesel.
Admittedly I work close to home so miles are not an issue. But I do drive a lot still and I just live with it. I have tweaked the ecu for lean cruise but that's only so I can just about visit the parents with out filling up!! Just lazy more than anything!!!

Like 007 suggested, reset the average mpg and then drive like miss daisy on the motorway, I tried it and could get it doing 28 mpg but to be honest, what the fk have do we have these cars for, and it's not to drive lke miss D
In the real life I would say in between 17 to 22 mpg is average for most

On WOT my immediate MPG reads 3. I'm guessing this is perfectly normal?
As this wasn't answered, mine does too, maybe 3.1. That's wot in 2nd say. I average around 25mpg maybe, a run is about 28.
I do have the instantaneous on quite a bit, just because when cruising it's a useful reminder that sometimes a few mm movement of your foot makes 10mpg difference with no noticeable change in forward momentum...
I'm about 6 or 7 tanks down in my CV8 and I'm averaging 20mpg by my own calculation, which has more or less tied up to what the computer says. However my journey to work averages 11mpg (short journey in traffic), whereas the drive to Brands hatch a few weeks saw 26mpg (thank God for 6th gear!).
As others say you don't buy a V8 for fuel economy, but I understand that sometimes you just want to eeeek out every last MPG on a boring drive, so you've got more fuel left for the blat at the weekend. It's taken me a bit of time to adapt driving a V8 everyday, as my last few daily drivers have been gutless petrols or sluggish diesels, but I think my MPG has benefited from it.

Has it recently been serviced?
If not, it might be worth replacing the oils - engine, gearbox and diff, whether they 'need' it or not. Get a new set of filters too - fuel and air, and see that there's no restrictions in the air filter piping / housing. COuld be worth checking the inlet manifold too, if it's not a huge job.
If not any better, maybe get it on a diagnostic tester, and see if there are any bugs? Or maybe a rolling-road tune up?

I think it'd be wise as a matter of procedure and prevention of any nasty suprises occurring.

I used my car last week driving like Miss Daisy and got 14mpg. These cars will never give pleasing mpg figures.
Just re-set the trip computer. Used this morning for a round trip of 15 miles. Got an average of 17.5 mpg. Used 6th along relatively straight B road (9 miles of the trip, 50 mph). Rest of the mileage was round town and I did give it some beans here and there!
I think 17.5 was pretty good! Should've reset that trip computer a while back!
I don't really use my car for a lot of long motorway driving because I don't use it for work. And since it's mostly town and country roads I drive on my average mpg never gets over the 13 mark. Never really thought too much about it coz the car runs great.
The only thing that really annoys me is if it gets to the very low fuel stage and you put twenty pounds in yi only get 50 miles. Compared to the 80 I got when I bought the car. Sweet consequence of v8 ownership.
