For all those going have a great day. Sadly work precludes me from this one but I shall be there in spirit For those running a few words of wisdom. Never run with less than a 1/4 tank of gas. Take your time with the 4th to 5th gearchange, if its giving you trouble abandon the run and either cruise down to a slow speed with the clutch in or select 6th gear and finish the run slowly. Any noise/smoke from the engine you don't like...clutch in and coast. The overrun may cause more damage than the failure. Check your tyre pressures/fluid levels and take spare oils. For the blower boys cable tie your dipstick in and take spare belts Take the run back as an opportunity to cool everything down and dont put the handbrake on when you stop. Have a great day all

Now you tell me! I'd like to echo the above. I really wouldn't want anyone else to suffer as we did. If you do find a problem with getting 5th, try short-shifting on the next run, as I've never had a similar problem at lower revs. If you're cautious, then you can always have another run.

Cheers Jez. It will be the first time in a manual for me!
But you wouldn't go up there with a full tank?

I have been on a race track with just under a 1/4of a tank in my senny and on some corners the car would cut out due to fuel starvation. It meant I had to back off a lot.
Better safe than sorry as said.

A/C on to help cool on run back. And for S/C lads, after runs, bonnet up, engine off but turn key back on, lets charge cooler run on its own.

and if you are in Monaro be very careful of finding reverse when going from 4th to 5th, something I ended up trying to do on the Silverstone circuit. It wasn't a nice noise!

Turbo chargers need lots of oil to cool down, so you need to keep the engine running for a while. Switching it off too soon will carbonise (I think that's a real word) the oil on the bearings, shortening the life of the turbo.
Try looking at a well thrashed turbo at night, it glows like a horseshoe just pulled from the fire!
